Men's Soccer Widens MIAA Lead With Victory Trine - Moves Up in National Polls;
Volleyball Retains Top Spot in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll;
Women's Cross Country Moves Up in National Poll - Men's Cross Country Remains Ranked;
Women's Basketball Ranked 17th in Preseason National Poll - Anna Timmer Named Preseason All-American by WDIII News

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Trine 0

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's soccer team improved to 10-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory at Trine on Wednesday afternoon. The victory keeps Calvin perfect in MIAA play at 7-0. The Knights have not allowed a goal in seven-straight matches and have eight shutouts on the year. Trine falls to 0-10-2 and 0-7-0 in the MIAA.
"Today was a good team win," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We did a lot of things very well today. I was very pleased with how our guys came out today and did their job. We have to now get ready for Saturday and prepare for a very good Adrian team."
Senior Stephen Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) got the scoring started in the 13th minute, when he snuck the ball past the left of the keeper from the top of the box. Sophomore Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was credited with the assist.
Freshman Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute. Off of a corner from junior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth), Adams was able to edge the Trine defense and get ahold of the ball with his head and put it in the net.
In the second half, Jacob Witte put the ball in the net off of a cross from junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon), to give Calvin a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute.
Eight minutes later, sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) made it 4-0. Breaking the Thunder defense on a two-on-one sophomore Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian) passed it to McCaw and he would find the back of the net.
Freshman Ben Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Spring Lake) tallied the final goal of the game in the 84th minute, with an assist to freshman Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian).
Junior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) was solid in the net for the Knights and recorded three saves. Van Ryn posted his seventh shutout of the season at Trine.
The Knights outshot the Thunder on Wednesday, 16-4. Jacob Witte and Bobby McCaw both notched three shots.
Calvin forced 13 corners against Trine and didn't allow one corner.
The Maroon and Gold return to action on Saturday when the Knights travel to Adrian to face the Bulldogs.

The Calvin men's soccer team has made a move up in the latest set of national rankings. The Knights are ranked 18th in this week's Division III National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top poll, up two spots from a week ago. VOLLEYBALL

For the third consecutive week, the Calvin women's volleyball team remains the top-ranked team in the Division III Top 25 poll conducted by the American Volleyball Coaches Association of America.

Calvin received 40 first place votes in this week's poll. The Knights (14-0) are one of three undefeated teams in the poll as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (14-0) is ranked second and Southwestern (Tx.) ranked third.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The Calvin men's cross country team is ranked 18th in this week's United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association national poll. Calvin's position is down four spots from last week when the Knights were ranked 14th.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The Calvin women's cross country team is ranked eighth in this week's United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association national poll. The Knights have moved up one spot from a week ago when they were ranked ninth.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin women's basketball team has received preseason national recognition from the Women's Division III Newsletter publication.

As a team, the Knights are ranked 17th in the Women's DIII News preseason Top 25 poll.

Calvin is coming off a 20-6 campaign a year ago including a second place finish in the MIAA.

In addition, senior Anna Timmer has been named a Women's DIII News preseason All-American.

A native of Caledonia and a graduate of South Christian High School, Timmer averaged a team-leading 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds a game last year while connecting on 57.4 percent of her field goal attempts. She was named to the 2016 All-MIAA first team and also received D3hoops.com All-Region accolades and was named a 2016 Women's DIII News Honorable Mention All-American.

The Calvin women's basketball team will be under the direction of head coach Chuck Winkelman this year. Winkelman will be in his first year at the helm of the Knights after previously serving as head women's basketball coach at Millsaps College and Hendrix College.

Calvin is scheduled to open its 2016-17 campaign on November 15 against Great Lakes Christian.
