David Dadzie Shatters Ghana National Record in Hammer Throw;
Women's Track and Field Athletes Push on at Last-Chance Meets

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

DELAWARE, Oh. - Calvin College senior David Dadzie concluded his collegiate track and field career on a high note, breaking his country's record in the hammer throw at the Great Lakes Elite Meet Thursday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan University.

A native of Accra, Ghana, Dadzie whipped the hammer 165-10 (50.56 meters) on Thursday, breaking the previous Ghana national record of 164-7 (50.16) set by Nicholas Gbeku in 1977.

Dadzie's throw was good for fifth place individually at the Great Lakes Meet.

"I'm extremely happy for David," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "He has been an extremely hard worker and a great senior leader this spring. To conclude your collegiate career with a national record is pretty special."

Dadzie also took fifth in the javelin throw (167-10).

In the men's 4x400 meter relay, Calvin took second with a season-best time of 3:17.50. The Calvin relay consisted of sophomore Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS), sophomore Marcus James (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Ethan Valentine (Powell, Oh./William Mason HS).

In the steeplechase, senior Andre Otte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) concluded his career with a time of 9:52.45.

Calvin took the top three spots in the 5,000 meter run with sophomore Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first in a time of 15:37.74. Junior Robert Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was second in 15:42.89 and junior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) third in 15:52.15.

In the 1500 meters, sophomore Hendrik VerMeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) was seventh (4:07.58) and senior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) eighth (4:09.63).

At the Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central College, Calvin junior Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) took 14th in the 5,000 meters (15:22.09). Senior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville HS) was sixth in the steeplechase (9:35.51). Senior Lucas Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) tied for fifth in the pole vault (15-5 1/2).

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

DELAWARE, Oh. - A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at pair of last-chance meets Wednesday and Thursday.

At the Great Lakes Elite Classic at Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday, sophomore Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) took third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.53) while senior Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth (1:04.08).

In the steeplechase, sophomore Marissa McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) took sixth (12:18.27).

Sophomore Megan Murray (Greeley, Col./Frontier Academy) was third in the 5,000 meters (18:42.00). Senior Maria Steblay (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie HS) was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.32).

Dyksen was third in the long jump (17-9 3/4) while sophomore Bethany Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) was fourth in the shot put (43-10 1/2).

Sophomore Michaela Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) had a big afternoon, cranking out a career-best throw of 136-1 that was good for sixth place. Senior Stacie Mead (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) had a throw of 131-2 in the hammer throw.

In the 4x400 meter relay, Dyksen, sophomore Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Skyline HS), Steblay and Verkaik took third with a time of 4:02.76.

At the North Central Gregory Invitational Thursday evening, freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) had a career-best time of 4:36.69.
