Meckes Named MIAA Women's Field Athlete of Week;
Women's Lacrosse Downs Adrian - Clinches MIAA Tournament Spot;
Men's Lacrosse Fights but Falls at Alma

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin College junior Michaela Meckes has been named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week in women's track and field.

Meckes, a junior from Bay City, won field athlete honors after throwing the top discus distance in the league this season at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State last weekend. Her throw of 132-3 placed No. 12 overall as the top Division III mark in the event. Besides topping the conference, the measurement also ranks No. 46 nationally.

A graduate of Saginaw Valley Lutheran High School, Meckes will compete at the Calvin Tune-Up Invitational this weekend.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 15, Adrian 5

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up a key MIAA victory over Adrian on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 8-5 on the year and 5-1 in MIAA play with the 15-5 victory. The victory secures Calvin a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
"I thought that we played well defensively," said Blake Boehm. "It was nice to get this win today on senior day. We now have to get ready and focus on our next game at Hope."
The Bulldogs struck first on Tuesday, scoring 16 seconds into the game on a shot from Ava Cares.
The Knights responded with five-straight goals to take back the lead, freshman Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) started the run with a goal at 27:45. Sophomore Amanda Davio (Okemos/Okemos HS) scored two minutes late. Freshman Kelly Pepper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored the next two goals and junior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Il./Hinsdale Central HS) scored the fifth goal.
Adrian scored its second goal with 15 minutes left in the half and Calvin countered with four-straight goals.
Emily Cefaratti scored next two goals, with Amanda Davio and Lauryn Slachter also scoring.
Calvin went into halftime with a 9-2 lead.
The Knights started the second half on a 3-0 run with goals from sophomore Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite School), Kelly Pepper and Emily Cefaratti.
With 22 minutes remaining, Lauryn Slachter scored on a free position. Emma Hall scored her second goal of the half with 19:30 remaining.
The Bulldogs clipped into the Calvin lead with two goals from Annie Rice.
The final goal of the game was scored by Amanda Davio with 4:59 left.
Freshman Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) had a strong night in net for Calvin, finishing with nine saves.
Emily Cefaratti finished with a game-high four goals.
Calvin outshot Adrian, 28-18
The Knights return to action on Thursday when they travel to Hope to face the Flying Dutch.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Alma 22, Calvin 12

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team fell at Alma 22-12 Tuesday evening at Balhke Field.

The Knights (5-10 overall, 0-6 MIAA) gave the Scots (11-4 overall, 5-1 MIAA) a strong challenge for one half before fading over the final quarter-and-a-half of play.

Calvin led 5-3 after the first quarter and trailed 11-7 at halftime. Calvin trailed just 12-9 five minutes into the third quarter before the Scots went on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 19-10 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The lead proved to be too much for Calvin to overcome as Alma claimed the win and guaranted itself the No. 2 seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.

Alma outshot Calvin 54-32 including 16-4 in the third quarter when the Scots pulled away.

Sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) and freshman Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) both had three goals and an assist.

Juniors Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) and Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) both tallied two goals and two assists. Freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, Id./Ambrose School) had a goal and an assist. Freshman Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills/Brother Rice HS) also tallied a goal.

Sophomore Austin Roden (Delaware, Oh./Delaware Christian HS) came up with a team-high six ground balls. Winkler and sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Me./Falmouth HS) had five ground balls apiece.

Freshman goalie Tristan Parece (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary School) had 12 saves.

Calvin will close out its season on Saturday, hosting Kalamazoo College at 10 a.m. at Zuidema Field.
