WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 14, Saint Mary's 5
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team improved to 6-5 on the year and 3-1 in MIAA play with a 14-5 victory over Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights have now won three of their last four games.
"Our message to the team was to come out strong and score early and often," said head coach Blake Boehm. "We knew that if we were able to get a lead, wed be able to slow the game down and control the pace. They have a strong defense and it took us some time to dissect it. Our defense held strong and caused some key turnovers to help us win the possession game."
Freshman Kayla Erffmeyer (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded the first goal of the game, two minutes into the first half.
Saint Mary's tied the game before the Knights scored three-straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Amanda Davio (Okemos/Okemos HS), junior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Il./Hinsdale Central HS) and freshman Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) all scored a goal.
The Knights closed out the first half on a 5-0 run. Amanda Davio started the run with two goals, a minute apart. Sophomore Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite School), freshman Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) all scored a goal to close out the half.
Calvin went into halftime with a 9-2 lead.
Emily Cefaratti started the scoring in the second half with a goal off of a free position.
The Belles scored a goal to cut the lead to 10-3. The Knights responded with goals from Amanda Davio and sophomore Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
The final two goals for the Maroon and Gold came from Lauryn Slachter and Emily Cefaratti.
The Knights outshot the Belles, 24-17.
Freshman Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) recorded eight saves in the win.
Calvin controlled the draw controls on Tuesday, winning 12 of the 21.
Amanda Davio led Calvin with four goals against the Belles.
