WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Illinois Wesleyan 8, Calvin 7

BLOOMINGTON, Il. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 8-7 decision to a talented Illinois Wesleyan squad Saturday afternoon.

Calvin (3-4) outshot the host Titans (10-1) by a 23-16 margin but could not come up with the equalizing goal inside the final seven minutes of play.

Calvin led on two separate moments in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the opening minute of the game and then grabbed a 4-3 lead on another Tilma goal with 7:33 left in the first half. Illinois Wesleyan tied the game 4-4 on a goal with 5:33 left in the first half and then dodged three Calvin shots in the closing minutes of the half including a shot by Tilma that hit the post with 2:25 remaining.

Sophomore Amanda Davio (Okemos/Okemos HS) scored three-and-a-half minutes into the second half to put the Knights up 5-4 but Illinois Wesleyan scored back-to-back goals to take a 6-5 lead and never trailed again.

Calvin came back to tie the 6-6 on a goal by junior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Il./Hinsdale Central HS) midway through the half but then fell behind 8-6.

Cefaratti scored on a free-position shot with 7:13 remaining to bring the Knights within one but the goal remained shut from that point on.

Calvin had four shots inside the final seven minutes including a free-position attempt with 33 seconds remaining but Illinois Wesleyan goalie Claire Quist was up to the task, making a clutch save to keep the Titans on top and seal the win.

"Illinois Wesleyan is a great team with strong coaching and talented athletes," said Calvin women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "I'm proud of our fight today. We had low numbers (of players) available but everyone came ready to play. We just fell short a bit with execution. We need to be better with our shot placement and decision making."

Cefaratti had three goals and an assist to lead Calvin's scoring attack while Tilma had two goals. Davio and sophomore Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had Calvin's other two goals while freshman Lauryn Slachter had an assist.

Baas won three ground controls while freshman Sky Gyuro (Warwick, NY/Storm King School) had three ground balls. Freshman goalie Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) had four saves for Calvin.

As a team, Calvin had 20 turnovers while Illinois Wesleyan had 27.

Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener on Wednesday at Calvin's Zuidema Field at 4 p.m.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 18, Carroll 1

WAUKESHA, Wisc. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team went to work on Saturday. An hour before game time, the Knights and their support staff helped shovel off nearly six inches of snow that had fallen on Schneider Stadium's turf surface on the campus of Carroll University.

A few hours later, Calvin completed the work day with an 18-1 win over the host Carroll Pioneers to improve its season record to 5-4.

"The weather was definitely challenging but our guys were ready for that challenge," Said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Luke Griemsman. "They were willing to pitch a hand in helping get the field ready and once the game got underway they were focused and determined. It was a real nice win and it feels good."

Calvin led `10-0 at halftime and added four goals in the third and four more in the fourth to complete the win.

Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) led Calvin in with a career-high five goals and four assists while sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) had four goals.
Freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, ID/Ambrose School) had three goals and an assist while junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS) had two goals and three assists. Sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert School) had a goal and two assists while freshmen Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills/Brother Rice HS) both had a goal and an assist. Freshman Seth Galyon (St. Anthony, MN/Concordia Academy) and sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) added one assist apiece.

Nedd scooped up a team-high nine ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers while Miller had eight grounders. Sophomore Derek VanderBrug (Woburn, Mass./Lexington Christian Academy) and freshman Hunter Naggs (Cedarburg, Wisc./Cedarburg HS) had five ground balls apiece with VanderBrug causing five turnovers. Naggs was also 15-19 on faceoff opportunities.

Freshman Tristan Parece (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary School) got the win in goal and picked up one save.

Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA season next Saturday when it hosts Olivet in a 1 p.m. match.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Alma 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis started the MIAA portion of the schedule with a sweep over the Alma Scots. The Knights defeated Alma on Saturday 9-0. Calvin is now 8-3 and 1-0 in the MIAA and Alma falls to 3-6 and 0-1 in the MIAA.
"That was a great win for us," said Calvin head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We had some really impressive performances today in singles and doubles. Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) played an amazing match at No. 1 singles today. Today was a great way to start the MIAA season."

The Knights started the day with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. The team of sophomore Lark Foote (Okemos/Okemos HS) and junior Liz Turner (Audobon, PA/Delaware County Christian HS) downed Matilda Ennis and Amy Wood.

The junior duo of Ellie Benzel and Claire Spoelhof earned Calvin its first victory over Alma in No. 1 doubles for the first time in three years. The Calvin duo defeated Megan Solano and Nikki Malekadelli, 8-2.

Sophomore Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and sophomore Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) won at No. 2 doubles over Paige Pontious and Claudia Barajas, 8-3.

Jessica Bouma earned Calvin's first singles victory of the day at No. 3 singles. Defeating Paige Pontious in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Minutes later, Claire Spoelhof earned the victory at No. 2 singles over Nikki Malekadeli, 6-1, 6-0.

Micaela Seazzu swept away the Scots' Claudia Barajas at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Freshman Alyssa Bowman (Rockford/Rockford HS) made quick work of Matilda Ennis at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, Ellie Benzel edged Megan Solano in a hard-fought tight match. Benzel defeated Solano, 6-3, 7-5.

"I am feeling great," said Benzel. "I couldn't have asked to play any better today. I am just really excited getting a win starting off conference play."

Sophomore Kari Kroeze (Holland/Holland Christian HS) closed out the match for Calvin at No. 6 singles, defeating Chloe Ramsey, 6-2, 6-1.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday as they host the Flying Dutch of Hope College.

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Albion 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team opened the MIAA schedule in winning fashion over Albion. The Knights defeated the Britons on Saturday afternoon, 8-1. Calvin improves to 6-2 on the year and 1-0 in the MIAA, Albion falls to 2-10 and 0-1 in MIAA play.
"It is always nice to start league play with a win," said Calvin head coach John Ross. "It was nice to finally play in front of our fans at home. I felt the guys did a nice job today and I am pleased with our result."
Senior Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd HS) and sophomore David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) made quick work of Josh McGarry and Peter Pappas at No. 2 doubles, 8-0.

At No. 3 doubles, freshman Jason Wolters (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and freshman Andrew Airgood (Sturgis/Sturgies HS) swept Nick Kinachtchouk and Robert Joerg, 8-0.

Sophomore Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph/St. Joseph HS) and junior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) rallied from behind at No. 1 doubles to defeat Ross Kynast and Zach McKenzie, 8-6.

Taylor Asfour was victorious over Zach McKenzie at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Matt VanWinkle won against Peter Pappas at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Matt Buesing won at No. 1 singles over Ross Kynast, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, David Brown topped Josh McGarry, 7-5, 6-3.

Calvin's last victory of the day came at No. 6 singles, where junior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) defeated Nick Kinachtchouk, 6-3, 6-2.

The Britons lone victory came at No. 5 singles. Robert Joerg edged Jason Wolters in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they resume MIAA play at Olivet.
