Lydia Gildea Subject of MIAA Student Spotlight Feature;
Baseball Drops Pair To Trine
SOFTBALL
Calvin senior Lydia Gildea of the Calvin softball team is the subject of the latest MIAA Student Spotlight video feature.
A native of Gobles, Michigan, Gildea is in her third year as Calvin's starting catcher. A graduate of Gobles High School, Gildea was a member of the 2015 All-MIAA second team in softball.
A Dean's List student at Calvin, Gildea is majoring in sports management and has been a student member of the Calvin Game Day staff that supports and promotes Calvin's athletics department.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team fell to Trine in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Knights fell in the first game 11-2 and lost the second game 12-9. Calvin is now 5-10 on the year and 1-3 in the MIAA, while Trine improves to 7-7.
"The hitter were able to do some things," said head coach John Rypel. "Each weekend we are going to see who is going to give us the best chance to win. We started four freshmen this week in conference, so there are some bright spots."
Trine would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Junior Mike Kempton would get the Knights on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when he lined out to right field, scoring senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS).
The Thunder would score three more runs to take a 6-1 lead before the Knights would strike again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) scored Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS)
Trine would score five more in the sixth inning to win the game, 11-2.
Mike Kempton and Ryan Stewart both tallied two hits in the first game.
Senior Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) threw four innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Trine would score in the first inning in game two as well to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Knights would fight back and would take a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Freshman Steven Dogger (Holland/Calvary Christian HS) would start the scoring with a double to right field to score sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS). Freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantion HS) would then score Mike Kempton on a sacrifice fly. Junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) scored Steven Dogger on an error by the Trine third baseman.
Calvin would score three more in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Ryan Stewart got things going with his first-career homerun at Calvin with a shot over the left field fence. Jordan VanderWall singled to right field that scored Mike Kempton. Steven Seager flied out to center field that allowed Steven Dogger to cross home plate.
Trine would respond with eight unanswered runs to take a 10-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Calvin would cut into Trine's lead with a three-run seventh inning. Jordan VanderWall doubled to left field, scoring Mike Kempton. Steven Seager would the single to left field to score Jordan Vanderwall and freshman Ryan Lang (Bedford, NH/Bedford HS), to cut the lead to 10-9.
That would be as close as the Knights would get on Monday with the Thunder adding two more runs to win, 12-9.
Jordan VanderWall finished with a team-high three hits, with Steven Seager notching a four RBI.
Freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had four strikeouts on Monday in the start.
The Knights return to action on Thursday when they travel to Holland, Michigan, to face arch-rival Hope College.
