ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin baseball team opened its 2016 MIAA campaign with a doubleheader split at Trine, winning the opener 2-1 before falling in game two 5-2.

Using a new MIAA format, game one was a seven-inning contest while the second game of the doubleheader was a nine-inning affair.

In game one, Trine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Calvin tied the score in the second on a run-scoring single by freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) that plated junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) who led off the inning with a double.

Trine placed one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but Wasserberger was able to shut the door to improve to 2-2 on the year. Keane had two of Calvin's three hits in the win.

In game two, Trine (5-7 overall, 1-1 MIAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added an insurance run in the sixth on a home run by Colton Conn. Calvin (5-8 overall, 1-1 MIAA) answered with a run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Nick Steiginga (Mahwah, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) tripled to left and came home a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS).

Steiginga later doubled in the top of the ninth and came home a single by Stewart but Trine was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back lineouts.

Steiginga led Calvin by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Jimmy Dirksen (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin while freshmen Clay Francisco (Delton/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) and Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) along with junior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) also saw time in relief.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On Saturday afternoon, the Calvin women's lacrosse team opened up its home schedule against the Lions of Mount St. Joseph University.
The Knights entered the contest with a 2-3 record and were looking to break a three-game losing streak. Calvin has been in the mix of all three losses but has come up short, falling to Capital (18-11), Berry (11-10) and Otterbein (9-6). Mount St. Joseph held a 2-4 record prior to the game, coming off a weekend split. The Lions won at Waynesburg 13-9 last Saturday and then fell to Saint Vincent 12-4 on Sunday.
Calvin snapped its losing streak, earning a 16-3 victory over Mount St. Joseph.
"The way we played today shows that we're starting to learn from our losses," said Calvin women's lacrosse head coach Blake Boehm. "Those were some close and tough games. Today we were able to put some things together that we weren't able to do over spring break. This win gives us a little momentum and shows us that we can execute the things that we've been practicing in games."
The Knights got off to a strong start, scoring the first three goals of the game within the first two minutes of play. Freshman Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) put Calvin on the board with the opening two goals, both unassisted. Freshman Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added another point for the Knights, scoring at the 1:48 mark; Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the assist on the goal.
Following the three Calvin goals, Mount St. Joseph called timeout. At the 3:35 mark, Erica Walsh scored a free position goal to put the Lions on the board.
As the midpoint of the first half neared, the Knights found their offensive groove, scoring four consecutive goals in less than two minutes.
Sophomore Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) started off the four-goal run off an assist by Pepper, finding the back of the net 11:12 into the half. Less than a minute later, sophomore Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) fed Tilma for another Calvin goal. Sophomore Amanda Davio (Okemos/Okemos HS) then contributed two more goals; Cefaratti and Pepper earned assists on the pair of goals.
The scoreboard read 7-1 in favor of Calvin with 16:57 remaining in the first half.
With just over 14 minutes left in the first half, Kara Marshall, assisted by Courtney Gleason, scored the Lions' second goal of the afternoon to bring the score to 7-2.
However, the Knights would hold their visitors scoreless for the remainder of the first half while scoring five goals themselves.
Davio (unassisted), Hall (assisted by Tilma), Cefaratti (two unassisted goals) and Pepper (unassisted) added points in the Knights offensive effort.
At halftime, Calvin held a 12-2 lead over Mount St. Joseph. The Knights outshot the Lions 18-7.
Cefaratti scored the first goal of the second half at the 4:18 mark to extend the Knights' lead to 11. Three minutes later, Tilma added another point for Calvin off an assist by Einfeld.
The Knights continued to roll in the second half as Hall capitalized on a free position attempt with 19:20 remaining in the contest. Under two minutes later, Cefaratti scored her fourth goal of the afternoon to bring the score to 16-2.
With 13 seconds left in the game, Courtney Gleason scored the Lions' only goal of the second half. When time expired, the final score read 16-3 in Calvin's favor.
In the victory, the Knights outshot their opponents 27-14. Calvin scooped up 18 ground balls while Mount St. Joseph earned six. Calvin goalkeeper Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis Country Day HS) recorded six saves on the afternoon.
Cefaratti led all scorers with four goals, also contributing a pair of assists. Pepper, Tilma and Davio chipped in three goals apiece for the Knights. Pepper and Einfeld also finished with two assists each.
"We protected the ball well today, which was one of our objectives coming into the game. We made smart decisions with the ball and efficiently transitioned down the field offensively," said Coach Boehm.
Next Saturday the Knights will travel to Illinois Wesleyan University for a nonconference matchup against the Titans (7-1). The following Wednesday on April 6, Calvin will host Trine in its first conference contest of the season.
