WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 12, Thomas More 4
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team started the 2016 season in winning fashion on Friday. The Knights picked up a road victory at Thomas More, 12-4. Calvin starts the year at 1-0 and the Saints are 0-2 on the season.
"We focused on hustling today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "I am proud of the way that we played today. They've been working hard in practice and are learning what it takes to be successful. Today they were intently focused on making smart decisions and protection of the ball."
Emily Cefaratti, a junior attacker from Hinsdale, Illinois, led all scorers on Friday with six goals.
Sophomore Amanda Davio, from Okemos, Michigan, tallied five goals on Friday afternoon.
"We wanted to do better things within our control," said Boehm. "Our effort and execution are two big things. Maddie Baas won a lot of draws for us today and Ellis Chalfant made some great saves in net. Emily Cefaraitti and Amanda Davio put up some big numbers for us today and helped our young offense begin to settle into a rhythm."
Emma Tilma, a freshman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, scored her first goal for the Maroon and Gold.
Fellow freshman, Ellis Chalfant, from St. Louis, Missouri netted four saves in her first victory.
"Thomas More is a young team," said Boehm. "They are fast and relentless. They fought to the end and made us work for the win. We knew we couldn't let our guard down."
Junior Tori Liles scored all four goals for Thomas More.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they stay in Kentucky to face Transylvania.
BASEBALL
Denison 3, Calvin 2 (11 innings)
WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Knights fell in the season opener on Friday afternoon to Denison in an extra innings-thriller, 3-2. The Knights are now 0-1 on the young season and Denison starts off 1-0 on the year.
"That was a fun game to be a part of," said head coach John Rypel. "Unfortunately we came up just short. We have to do a better job with runners in scoring position, but I was encouraged by the swings we took. We had a lot of freshmen make their debuts today and I think they stepped up to the challenge. We are looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow.
The Knights return back to the diamond on Saturday as they will face the Big Red of Denison in a double header in Westfield, Indiana, starting at noon.
