Calvin 1, Mount Aloysius 0
DELAWARE, Oh. - The Calvin men's soccer team advanced to the second round of NCAA III Tournament play with a 1-0 victory over Mount Aloysius Friday night on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
Calvin will face host Ohio Wesleyan (16-4-2) Saturday at 5 p.m. in the regional final. Ohio Wesleyan defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering 2-1 in the opening first round game Friday.
The game will be a rematch of last year's NCAA III Regional final which ended in a 1-1 double-overtime tie but saw Ohio Wesleyan advance by way of a penalty kick shootout. It will also mark the third meeting of the year between the two teams in NCAA III Tournament play in the last five years.
In its win over Mount Aloysius, Calvin (21-0-1) scored the only goal of the game just 1:58 into the match as junior Jay Noyola (Lansing/East Lansing HS) headed in a corner kick taken by sophomore Mitch Stark (South Lyon/South Lyon HS) that was sent over to the far post by senior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Noyola was able to dart in on the double-pass to cram home his first goal of the season.
Calvin continued to pressure the Mount Aloysius goal, outshooting the Mounties 32-4 but could not score again. Mount Aloysius goalkeeper Justin Hann came up with 15 saves including several of the acrobatic variety.
Mount Aloysius (12-7-2) had one strong chance in the dying seconds of the match but a shot in the box by the Mounties was deflected wide of the Calvin goal.
Calvin goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) was again stellar in nets for the Knights, posting his 17th shutout of the season.
"We are very happy to move on with the win," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I want to give a huge credit to Mount Aloysius and its coaching staff. That is an incredibly athletic and committed team. Soccer is a fickle game. I thought we played well and created a lot of great chances that maybe didn't show up on the scoreboard. But it's survive and advance. Now we have to rest up and get ready for Ohio Wesleyan."
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, MSOE 2
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 win over MSOE on a cold Friday at Zuidema Field. The Knights improved to 19-2-2 on the year with the win. The Raiders of MSOE finish the year at 15-7-0.
"We were well aware of their recent history of coming from behind," said head coach Mark Recker. "Especially in their final vs. Aurora. I feel at times when you come out and score early like we did you can turn off a little bit mentally and I thought we did. We gave up a quick counter attack goal. Still this isn't a team that doesn't stop, they regrouped at halftime and they really came after it in the second half and worked as a complete unit."
Senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) got the Knights on the board first in the 11th minute. TenHarmsel chipped the ball over the keepers head from eight yard out. Junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) was credited with an assist.
