CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 5, 2015

Fall Sports Athletes Receive Weekly Honors From MIAA;
Women’s Basketball Ranked Sixth in WDIII News Preseason Top 25 Poll

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Mark DeJong of Calvin claimed the Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week Award from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) on Monday for meets through Oct. 4.
A sophomore from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, DeJong posted a strong finish for the 16th-ranked Calvin Knights, placing 55th with a time of 25:46 on the 8K course of the Gold Division at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.
As the third Knight to cross the finish line, DeJong helped Calvin place 10th overall with 267 points in a strong field of Division I, II and the top-ranked Division III squad, North Central College.

MEN'S GOLF

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) selected Ben VanScoyk of Trine as the Men’s Golfer of the Week on Monday for tournaments through Oct. 4.
VanScoyk, a sophomore from Grand Rapids, posted a pair of second-place finishes in MIAA Jamborees at home and at Adrian last week. At the Jamboree that the Knights hosted in Cascade last Monday, he carded an even par round of 72 to finish one stroke out of first place.
On Saturday at the Adrian event, VanScoyk again finished second individually with a round of 75, one shot off of the overall lead. He enters the final week of fall competition as the MIAA individual leader with a 73.6 strokes-per-round average.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin defender Nick Groenewold as the league’s Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for matches through Oct. 4.
Groenewold, a senior from Oak Brook, Ill., anchored the Calvin defense in two shutout victories at home over Adrian and Kalamazoo last week. Against Adrian he registered a shot on goal with a header near the far post that was cleared off the line by an Adrian defender. On Saturday it was Groenewold that cleared a first-half shot on goal by Kalamazoo that snuck past the keeper with an acrobatic flick of his right foot at the goal line. It marks the second Player of the Week honor for Groenewold this season.

The Calvin men's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Albion for a 4 p.m. match.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin women's basketball team is ranked sixth in the preseason Division III Top 25 poll released by the Women's Division III Newsletter earlier today.

A year ago, Calvin reached the national quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament before finishing the year with an overall record of 30-1. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season crown with a 16-0 conference mark and then won the MIAA Tournament title.

Calvin is slated to return 10 letterwinners from last year's team.

The Knights will open their 2015-16 campaign on November 13 at North Central College in a meeting of teams that reached the 2015 NCAA III Tournament.
