CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 2, 2015

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The 10th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team placed 13th in the Gold Division of the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon. Competing in a field of Division I, Division II and nationally-ranked Division III teams, the Knights recorded a team score of 303 points.

Butler took first place with 108 points followed by Indiana State in second with 114 points.

Junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory High School) continued her outstanding junior season by placing sixth individually with a time of 17:39 on the 5K course. Strohbehn was the top Division III finisher. The five finishers ahead of Strohbehn were all Division I runners.

Freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) was Calvin's second finisher, placing 65th in 18:46 while sophomore Kate McLain (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was 73rd in 18:51.

Junior Autumn Vonk (Holland/Zeeland West HS) was 76th in 18:55 while sophomore Marissa Hielkema (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was 103rd in 19:14.

Rounding out Calvin's finishers were junior Jessie Mulder (Holland/Holland Christian HS) in 112th (19:30), sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix HS) in 115th (19:38) and senior Lora Huizengh (Byron Center/South Christian HS) in 126th (19:57).

Maria McDaniel of Western Michigan won the 5K Gold Division race with a time of 16:58.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The 16th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team took 10th in the Gold Division of the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon. Competing in a field of Division I, II and top-ranked (Division III) North Central College, Calvin posted a team score of 267 points.

Clemson claimed first place with 53 points with North Central second with 88 points. 14th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the only other Division III team to finish ahead of Calvin, posting a team score of 175 points.

Junior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) had a strong finish for Calvin individually, placing 28th with a time of 25:19 on the 8K course.

Sophomore Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) was 51st in 25:42 while sophomore Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 55th in 25:46.

Senior Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was 62nd in 25:50 while senior Andre Otte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 72nd in 26:04.

Rounding out Calvin's finishers were senior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) in 79th (26:10), freshman Jamison Koeman (Milford, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) in 85th (26:13), senior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville HS) in 91st (26:19) and junior Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) in 94th (26:23).

Zach Plank of North Central was the winner of Friday's Gold Division race with a time of 24:30.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team opened the season at the ITA/USTA Regionals in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday. Calvin picked up six singles victories on Friday.
The team of sophomore Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and junior Liz Turner (Aubobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) was defeated by Kelsey Forkin and Claire O'Connor of North Central, 9-7. The pair of Knights finished the day falling to Taylor LaBarge and Amanda Susnak of Hope, 8-2.
The duo of junior Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) and junior Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) fell to Dana Goggin and Ali MacDonald of Augustana, 8-1. The team finished the day falling to Brooke Butterworth and Adrienne D'Alewyn, 8-2.
In singles action, Ellie Benzel picked up a win in the singles main draw over Katherine Devine of John Caroll, 6-4, 6-3. Benzel will face Taylor Hawkins of Denison on Saturday.
Claire Spoelhof found herself coming out on top of a close battle with Heidi Mueller of Allegheny, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Spoelhof then fell to Kaela Bynoe of Chicago, 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) saw herself coming up short against Andrea Bush of Allegheny, 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore Kari Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) started the day earning a victory of Monmouth's Katy Tolsky, 6-4, 6-1. Kroeze finished the day falling to Jennifer Lowe of Case Western, 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) made quick work of Kim Baione of Ohio Northern, 6-1, 6-0. Seazzu lost a hard fought battle with Rachel Rose, 7-5, 1-6, 11-9.
Freshman Alyssa Bowman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) picked up two victories on Friday afternoon. Bowman started the day downing Maddie Ulrich of DePauw, 6-1, 6-1. She would finish the day with a win over Taylor Heasley of Ohio Northern, 7-5, 6-4.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they will compete in the final day of the USTA/ITA Regionals in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
