Volleyball Claims Victories Over Alma and Heidelberg

ALMA, Mich. - The No. 5 Knights improved to 12-3 on the year and to 6-0 in the MIAA, defeating Alma, 3-0. Calvin has not dropped a set so far this season in conference play. The Knights finished the day defeating Heidelberg, 3-0.
In set one against Alma, Calvin jumped out to an early, 5-0, lead behind the serve of junior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS). The Knights would make quick work of the Scots in the first set, taking the set, 25-5. Calvin hit .720 in the first set, with senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) recording six kills in the set. Freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) tallied two aces in the set.
With the second set tied at two, Keilahna Castillo helped create some separation with her serve to help extend the Calvin lead to, 6-2. The Scots would cut the Knight lead to, 11-8, but Calvin would respond with a, 6-2 run. Calvin would go on to take the set, 25-16. Sophomore Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) recorded her first career kill at Calvin.
Alma started the third set attacking, exchanging point with the Knights and taking an early, 9-7 lead. Calvin would push back to take an, 11-10 lead. The teams would continue to exchange points until the set was tied at 14. The Knights would go on to a 4-1 run and extend the lead to 21-17. Alma would answer back to cut the Calvin lead to 21-20, but it wouldn't be enough. Calvin would go on to take the set 25-22.
Maggie Kamp finished the match with 10 kills and two aces. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) finished the Alma match with 25 assists. Keilahna Castillo tallied 15 digs and five aces with senior Jamie Kooiman (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene HS)and Laura Danhoff both tallying two aces. Danhoff finished with two digs.
The No. 5 Knights picked up their second win on Friday afternoon, defeating Heidelberg, 3-0.
In the first, the Knights would break open the set tied at three with an 11-2 run. The run was anchored by three kills from junior Laura Danhoff. Heidelberg would fight back and cut the Calvin lead to, 14-10. The Knights would finish the set on an 11-6 run, to take the set, 25-16. Laura Danhoff and sophomore Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian HS) tallied four kills in the set.
The second set saw another tight start with both teams exchanging points until the set was tied at seven. The Knights would go on a 4-0 run to force Heidelberg to call timeout. With Calvin leading, 16-13, the Knights would go on a 4-1 run to make it 20-14. Heidelberg would claw back to cut the lead to 20-17. The Knights would finish the set on a 5-1, behind the serve of senior Jamie Kooiman. Calvin would take the set, 25-18.
Laura Danhoff helped the Knights take a 6-0 lead in the third set, behind three aces. The Knights would not look back, taking the set, 25-10.
Calvin finished the match with eight aces, with four from Laura Danhoff. Danhoff led all players with 11 kills. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk tallied 32 assists in the match. Freshman Keilahna Castillo had 13 digs.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as Calvin travels to Trine for another important MIAA match.
