Calvin Volleyball Team Gains Number One Ranking in AVCA Division III Preseason Top 25 Poll - Also Gain Top Spot in MIAA Coaches' Poll

VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin women's volleyball team will open the 2015 season as the number-one ranked team in Division III volleyball. The Knights were given the number-one spot in the preseason Division III Top 25 poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association earlier today.

Calvin received 42 of a possible 62 first place votes to tally 1,542 points. Emory University (Ga.) is ranked second in the poll with 1,462 points while Hope is ranked third with 1,424 points.

Calvin is scheduled to face eight teams during the 2015 season that are ranked in the AVCA preseason Division III Top 25 poll. During the year, Calvin is scheduled to face second-ranked Emory and third-ranked Hope twice. The Knights will also meet fourth-ranked Wittenberg (Oh.), fifth-ranked Cal Lutheran, ninth-ranked Washington University of St. Louis, 12th-ranked Eastern University (Pa.), 13th-ranked Clarkson University (N.Y.), and 24th-ranked Pacific Lutheran (Ca.) once.

A year ago, Calvin finished 31-4 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA III Tournament. Under the direction of head coach Amber Warners, Calvin has captured national titles in 2010 and 2013 while also reaching the national final in 2012.

The Knights return three players that received 2014 AVCA Division III All-America honors including 2014 AVCA Division III National Player of the Year Maggie Kamp who is a senior outside hitter. Also returning is junior middle-blocker Laura Danhoff, a 2nd team All-American last year along with sophomore setter Jenna Lodewyk, a third team All-American in 2014. Lodewyk was the 2014 AVCA Division III National Freshman of the Year.

In addition, Calvin has been tabbed as the favorite in the MIAA volleyball preseason coaches' poll.

The Knights received eight first place votes in the poll released this afternoon with Hope receiving the other first place vote.
Trine was picked to finish third in the poll followed by Alma in fourth.

A year ago, Calvin and Hope shared the MIAA regular season championship as both teams recorded 15-1 league records.

Calvin continued on to win the 2015 MIAA Tournament title before falling in the NCAA III Tournament semifinals, finishing with a final overall season record of 31-4.

Calvin will open its season on September 4 and 5 when it hosts its own Calvin Labor Day Weekend Invitational.
