Calvin Volleyball and Men’s Basketball Teams Receive Academic Honors

VOLLEYBALL

For the fourth consecutive year, the Calvin women's volleyball team has received the AVCA Team Academic Award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Under the direction of head coach Amber Warners, the Calvin women's volleyball team compiled a 3.556 grade point average as a team during the 2014-15 academic year.
It was another stellar year for the Calvin women's volleyball team as the Knights captured their fifth straight MIAA regular season title, garnered their fourth straight MIAA Tournament title and then reached the semifinals of the NCAA III Tournament.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Kansas City, Mo. -- Six members of the 2014-15 Calvin men's basketball team have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court. Named to the NABC Honors Court from Calvin are Tyler Dykstra, Jordan Brink, T.J. Huizenga , Daniel Stout Austin Parks and Jordan Daley.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2014-15 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) and Stout (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian HS) are receiving the award for the second straight year. Huizenga (Randolph, WI/Randolph HS), Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) Parks (Niles/Niles HS) and Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) are receiving the honor for the first time.

Brink, Stout, Dykstra and Huizenga were graduated from Calvin this past May while Parks and Daley just completed their junior campaigns for the Knights.
The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.
A record number 1,000 student-athletes from 350 colleges and universities earned NABC Honors Court distinction.

In addition, the Calvin men's basketball team has received the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Team Academic Excellence Award.

The NABC announced the third annual Team Academic Excellence Awards today, created by the NABC Committee on Academics. The award, earned by more than 175 colleges and universities, recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2014-15 season.

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Divisions I, II, III, and NAIA Divisions I and II, must count the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes who competed during the 2014-15 season.

Under the direction of head coach Kevin Vande Streek, the Calvin men's basketball team achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.422 during the 2014-15 academic year. On the court, Calvin achieved a won-loss record of 22-7 while capturing MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles. The Knights also reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament.
