Calvin Sending Eight to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field team will be sending eight individuals to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week in in Canton, New York, on the campus of St. Lawrence University.
Representing the Calvin men's team will be seniors Ben de Waal Malefyt and Steven Haagsma along with junior Ethan Anderson and freshman Ethan Valentine. Representing the Calvin women's team will be seniors Sarah Danner and Kate Ardinger, junior McKenzie Diemer and sophomore Lauren Strohbehn.
The following are capsules of the eight individuals competing for Calvin:
MEN'S TEAM
BEN DE WAAL MALEFYT - (MIDLAND PARK, NJ/EASTER CHRISTIAN HS) - de Waal Malefyt will be making his second trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He will compete in the discus where he is seeded 14th with a throw of 166-8. Last year he placed 16th at the national meet. Earlier this spring he was the MIAA champion in the discus and earned a spot on the All-MIAA men's track and field team for the second straight year.
STEVEN HAAGSMA - (GRANDVILLE/CALVIN CHRISTIAN HS) - Haagsma will be making his third consecutive trip to the outdoor national meet and will again compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Haagsma is seeded 10th in the race with a time of 9:08.43. In 2013 Haagsma competed in the prelims of the steeplechase but did not advance. Last year he advanced to the finals and placed 13th. Haagsma was the 2015 MIAA champion in the steeplechase and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team.
ETHAN ANDERSON - (STILLWATER, MN/STILLWATER AREA HS) - Anderson will be making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He will compete in the 10,000 meter run where he is seeded 15th (30:37.38).
ETHAN VALENTINE - (Mason, OH/William Mason HS) - Valentine will be making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He will compete in the 400 meters where he is seeded 14th (47.85). Valentine was the MIAA runner-up in the even to Trine's Tyler Bourdo at the MIAA Championships earlier this month. Bourdo is also a national qualifier in the 400 meters.
WOMEN'S TEAM
KATE ARDINGER - (ELMHURST, IL/Timothy Christian HS) - Ardinger will be making her first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the 1,500 meters where she is seeded 15th (4:32.57). Ardinger was the MIAA runner-up in the 1,500 meters earlier this month.
SARAH DANNER - (WATKINS GLEN, NY/CHARLES DICKERSON HS) - Danner will be making her second appearance at the national meet. She will compete in the 10,000 meters for the second consecutive year where she is seeded ninth with a time of 35:53.44. Last spring she placed 19th in the event at the national meet. At the MIAA Championships earlier this month, Danner was the league champion in the 5,000 meters and landed a spot on the All-MIAA team.
LAUREN STROHBEHN - (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory HS) - Strohbehn will be making her first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the 5,000 meters where she is seeded 12th (17:05.58). Strohbehn was the MIAA runner-up this spring in the 5,000 meters and was later named to the All-MIAA team.
McKENZIE DIEMER - (Caledonia/South Christian HS) - Diemer will be making her first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase where she is seeded fifth (10:36.75). Earlier this month, Diemer was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner in women's track and field after winning the league title in the 1,500 meters with a conference record time of 4:35.48.
