Track and Field Athletes Compete at North Central College Gregory Invitational
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin men's track and field team came up with one last-chance push to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday and Friday night at the North Central College Gregory Invitational.
The Knights put together a collection of solid performances at the two-day competition. The highlight of the meet for Calvin came from freshman Ethan Valentine (Mason, OH/William Mason HS) who clocked a career-best time of 47.85 in the 400 meters. Valentine's time is currently the 16th best time nationally and puts him in strong contention for a trip to the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His time was also just four-tenths of a second off Calvin's school record time of 47.46 set by Phil Sikkenga in 2001.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) punched his ticket to next week's national meet, recording a season-best time of 9:08.43. Haagsma's time ranks as the 10th-best time in the event this spring and will allow him to make his third consecutive trip to the national meet.
In the 1,500 meters, senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) came in with a season-best time of 3:58.09.
In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) had a career-best time of 14:45.07.
In the triple jump, sophomore Jon Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a mark of 43-3 1/4.
The official NCAA III qualification list is expected to be released later this weekend.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women's track and field team competed at the North Central College Gregory Invitational Thursday and Friday night in a last push to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Calvin came up with several big performances and may have added one additional entrant to the national qualification list at the meet.
Running near her hometown of Elmhurst, Illinois, senior Kate Ardinger (Timothy Christian HS) clocked a career-best time of 4:32.57 in the 1,500 meters. Her time places her 17th on the current NCAA III list and puts her in solid contention for a qualifying spot for next week's national meet.
Calvin also had a set of standout performances in the 800 meters as freshman Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix HS) had a career-best time of 2:14.29 while senior Mia Rienstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) did the same with a time of 2:15.61.
In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Jessie Mulder (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a career-best time of 18:05.81 while freshman Catherine Croft (Coopersville/Coopersville HS) had a career-best time of 18:40.65.
In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had a career-best time of 37:36.37.
In the 400 meter hurdles, senior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) closed out her career with a season-best time of 1:04.56 while senior Kelley Tuinenga (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) closed out her career with a time of 1:04.91.
In the steeplechase, senior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a time of 11:18.72 and senior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) a time of 11:45.89.
In the triple jump, freshman Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) had a jump of 36-6 1/4.
The official NCAA III qualification list is expected to be released later this weekend.
