CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS ROUNDUP FOR APRIL 19, 2015
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE - The Calvin women's track and field team competed in the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University this past weekend. The Knights scored in several events and placed fifth with a team score of 45 points.
Freshman Anita VanderMeulen had a stellar performance in the 400 meters, taking second with a career-best time of 58.79.
Senior Kate Ardinger took third in the 1,500 meters with a career-best time of 4:36.88 that places her 19th on the current NCAA III performance list. Junior McKenzie Diemer was seventh with a season-best time of 4:41.17.
In the 800 meters, freshman Caroline Boss took seventh with a career-best time of 2:17.32. Freshman Jenna Dyksen took eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.20.
In the 400 meter hurdles, senior Breann Verkaik took fifth with a season-best time of 1:04.63 while teammate Kelley Tuinenga was eighth in a season-best time of 1:05.37.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the team, of junior Maria Steblay, Dyksen, junior Kally Verkaik and VanderMeulen took seventh with a season-best time of 49.75. In the 4x400 meter relay, the quartet of freshman Tiffany Applewhite, Breanna Verkaik, Boss and VanderMeulen took fourth with a season-best time of 4:00.86.
Calvin also fared well in the field events. Freshman Bethany Love unloaded a career-best toss of 39-10 ¾ in the shot put that was good for sixth place. Junior Stacie Mead also had a career-best throw of 38-6 in the shot that took 11th.
In the discus, sophomore Michaela Meckes took 12th with a career-best throw of 126-10.
In the javelin, junior senior Jordyn Platt was third (109-1) while senior Haley Stadnikia was fourth (108-7).
Calvin will now prepare for a busy week of action that will include competition at the Hillsdale Relays and Ernie Mousseau Classic.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Senior Erik Holstege had a strong performance in the 110 high hurdles, clocking a career-best time of 14.71 that was good for fourth place individually and currently places him 14th on the NCAA III performance list.
Sophomore Jon Cok scored in two events, placing fourth in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 44-5 ¼ and taking second in the high jump with a season-best jump of 6-5.
In the steeplechase, sophomore Jonathan Schaap took eighth with a time of 10:26.84.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of Holstege, junior Joel Ooms, freshman Noah Buteyn and freshman Ethan Valentine clocked in with a sixth place time of 3:23.01.
Calvin will now prepare for a busy week of action that will include competition at the Hillsdale Relays and Ernie Mousseau Classic.
MEN'S GOLF
ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men's golf team tied for third at the opening round of the 54-hole MIAA Spring Tournament. The tournament determines the MIAA's automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Championships. Saturday's tournament was hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Club.
Calvin tied for third with Adrian with a team score 297 while host Trine came in at 294 and Hope in first at 284.
A pair of freshmen led Calvin as John Van Noord had a 72 and Ben VanScoyk had a 73. John Van Noord tied for fourth place individually while VanScoyk tied for ninth. Senior James VanNoord was next for Calvin with a 75 while junior Jason Zeigler had a 77 and junior Justin Crow a 78.
Evan Telzerow of Hope of Hope and Brandon Skytta of Adrian shared medalist honors with rounds of 69.
With a 10-stroke lead over the rest of the field, Hope will host the final two 18-hole rounds which will take place April 24 and 25 at the Wuskowhan Player's Club in West Olive.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Trine 4
The Calvin men's tennis team picked up an important 5-4 conference victory over Trine University Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
The Knights are now 7-7 overall and alone in second place in the MIAA standings at 3-1 with just two conference matches left to play next week.
Calvin gained the early lead by winning two of the three doubles points. Sophomore Taylor Asfour and freshman Matt VanWinkle were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles while junior Matt Buesing and senior Tom Griffin pulled off an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Singles play then turned into a dog-fight. Trine picked up a win at No. 1 singles to tie the score at two but Griffin came up with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to put the Knights up 3-2. Trine picked up a three-set win at No. 3 singles to again tie the score at 3-3 but freshman David Brown came up with a 6-3, 7-5 win at five singles and Asfour clinched the win with a gutty 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at four singles to pick up the clinching fifth point for the Knights.
"It was another hard-fought conference win but our guys are digging down and refusing to fold and that's a good sign," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "Last year we lost a ton of these (5-4) matches. This year we're learning how to turn them around in our favor and that's a great sign for this team."
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Bethel College (Ind.) in a non-conference match. The Knights then travel to Alma on April 24 and to Hope on April 25 to conclude the regular season.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Olivet 0
The Calvin women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 conference victory over Olivet Saturday morning to improve to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play. The Knights are currently in fourth place in the MIAA standings, right behind 5-2 Saint Mary's.
Calvin roared through doubles play with three straight victories. Senior Megan Visser and sophomore Claire Spoelhof picked up an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles while sophomore Ellie Benzel and freshman Jessica Bouma were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Liz Turner and freshman Kari Kroeze 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin then won all six of its singles matches in straight sets. Senior Megan Visser was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles, Benzel a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles, Spoelhof a 7-6, 6-4 winner at No. 3 singles, Bouma a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles, senior Ali Roode a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles and Turner a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles.
"I thought our doubles play was the real spark for our team," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We came out focused and very crisp and that momentum continued throughout the rest of the match."
Calvin will conclude its regular season campaign next week with home matches against Bethel College (April 21) Trine (April 22) and Trine (April 25).
SOFTBALL
Adrian 14, Calvin 8

Calvin softball hosted Adrian College on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The Knights fought hard with the Bulldogs but dropped both games of the doubleheader, losing game one 15-8 and game two 10-7.
In game one, the lead changed four times in an offensive shootout.
Adrian opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first. The Knights responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, including freshman Jessica Brasser's first collegiate home run, and another run in the second to lead 3-2.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the third to go ahead 4-3, but allowed five runs a half-inning later to see the Knights pull ahead 8-4.
Adrian then scored four runs in the fourth to knot the game at 8-8. After two scoreless innings, Calvin gave up seven runs to the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh.
The Knights were unable to respond, and Adrian downed Calvin 15-8 in the first contest.
The Knights were led offensively by Brasser, who went 3-for-4 with one run scored and five RBI.
Junior Ashley Riemersma went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Freshman Makela Chapman took the loss in the circle for Calvin.
For Adrian, Morgan Brandt went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
In game two, the Bulldogs jumped out to a fast start, plating seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Calvin responded with three runs in the third inning, then plated four in the fourth, including a bases-clearing double from Riemersma, to tie the game at 7-7.
Adrian regained the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs. The Bulldogs scored another in the sixth, and held Calvin scoreless in innings five through seven to sweep the Knights by winning game two 10-7.
Riemersma finished game two 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while senior Christie VanderMeer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Chapman again took the loss in the circle for the Knights.
For the Bulldogs, Brooke Stewart went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI while also earning the win in the circle.
The Knights fall to 3-9 in the MIAA and 9-19 overall, while Adrian moves to 6-6 in league play and 20-12 overall.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Holland to face Hope College. First pitch between the Knights and Flying Dutch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
