Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Hope

HOLLAND - The Calvin baseball team was on opposite sides of shutout baseball on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Hope's Boeve Stadium, winning the opener 7-0 before dropping the nightcap 9-0.
Senior Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a happy Holland homecoming by tossing a two-hit shutout in the opener for the Knights, striking out four and walking one.
Calvin (5-10 overall, 1-5 MIAA) scored two in the first, two in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the seventh to provide Schepers with all the run support he would need.
Sophomore Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) got things going for the Knights in the first with a two-run homer to right-center.
In the third, senior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) delivered a two-run RBI single. Freshman Nick Steiginga (Mahwah, NJ/Easter Christian HS) had a two-run RBI single of his own in the fifth and Cupery added another run-scoring single in the seventh.
Cupery finished the game by going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while senior Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Steiginga and Wolfe also had two hits apiece.
Schepers picked up the win to up his season record to 1-1.
In game two, Hope (8-5 overall, 3-3 MIAA) jumped all over the Knights with five runs in the bottom of the first and steadily increased its lead as the game progressed.
Calvin was limited to six hits in the loss and also committed five errors which led to six unearned runs.
Senior Austin Juza (St. Joseph/Lake Michigan Catholic HS) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Sophomore Matt Kotva (Elkhart, IN/Concord HS) went 3-for-3 at the plate for Calvin in defeat.
The two teams will meet in a Saturday doubleheader at Calvin slated to start at 1 p.m.
