Women's Tennis Edged by Spring Arbor

Spring Arbor 5, Calvin 4
The Calvin women's tennis suffered a hard-fought 5-4 defeat to visiting Spring Arbor University Wednesday night inside Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Spring Arbor (13-5) took early control by claiming two of the three doubles points, winning 8-6 at two doubles and 8-1 at three doubles. Calvin's lone doubles point came from its number-one doubles tandem of senior Megan Visser and sophomore Claire Spoelhof by a 9-7 score.
The match then went back-and-forth in singles play as the Cougars took wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles over Visser and Spoelhof respectively. The Knights countered with victories from sophomore Ellie Benzel (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 singles, freshman Jessica Bouma (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4 singles and senior Ali Roode (6-4, 6-0) at No. 5 singles.
With the match tied 4-4, the deciding point came down to No. 6 singles with Monika Wynne pulling out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over freshman Kari Kroeze.
Calvin is now 5-5 on the year. Two of Calvin's recent defeats have now come by 5-4 decisions.
"It was a tough loss but I love the fight that my team has," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "There is a lot of heart and commitment on this team and we will only get better from here."
Calvin will travel to Alma on Saturday for an MIAA match slated to start at noon. The match will serve as the league opener for the Knights.
