CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 11, 2015

Men's Lacrosse Holds on For 9-8 Win over Dubuque;
Women's Lacrosse Falls to Carthage 14-9

Calvin 9, Dubuque 8

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men's lacrosse evened its record at 2-2 on the season with an exciting 9-8 non-conference victory over the University of Dubuque Wednesday evening in a game played at Wheaton Academy.

Calvin led 5-2 at halftime and then held a 7-6 advantage heading in the fourth quarter. Calvin held an 8-7 lead when senior Jonathan VanderLaan broke free for a goal with just 1:10 to play to put the Knights up 9-7.

Dubuque won the ensuing faceoff and marched quickly down the field to score a goal with just under a minute to play, trailing 9-8.

Dubuque was then able to gain possession in the closing seconds but the Knights fended off a handful of shots at goal to hang on to the win.

"It was definitely a game that gets your blood pressure going," said first-year head coach Kyle Hofstaedter with a laugh after the game. "It was a really gutsy effort by our guys and we did everything we could to hang on. I give our guys a ton of credit for fighting hard to get this win."

Calvin will host Capital University in a non-conference game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Aquinas College.

The Calvin women's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the year, falling 14-9 to Carthage College Wednesday afternoon at Mehney Field in East Grand Rapids.

Calvin (1-1) started out like a house afire as the Knights roared out to a 5-0 lead behind a pair of goals from sophomore Emily Cefaratti and freshman Amanda Davio and a lone goal by senior Karissa Reed.

Davio later scored to put the Knights up 6-2 but Carthage (3-2) regrouped by scoring the final three goals of the half to trail just 6-5 at the break.

Carthage then scored two quick goals out of the break before the Knights responded with scores by senior Paige Noordyke and Davio to take an 8-7 lead.
Carthage responded with four unanswered goals including one shorthanded to take an 11-7 lead and the Knights could not recover.

Calvin received a late goal by junior Carolyn Forbes but not before Carthage had taken a commanding lead.

Calvin outshot Carthage 14-8 in the first half but Carthage turned the tables in the second half, outshooting the Knights 14-6 over the final 30 minutes.

"The momentum turned when we stopped doing what we were doing early in the game," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "Early in the game we were possessing the ball, making strong aggressive runs at the goal and playing with precision. We lost that drive suddenly in the first half and it was hard to get the momentum back."

Boehm also mentioned that the four-goal swing by Carthage in the second half was crucial. "That four goal run was big for them," said Boehm. "It came down to little things for us like protecting the ball with our pass-and-catch game. The little mistakes added up and that was the difference in the game in my opinion."

Forbes led Calvin in ground balls with seven while Reed scopped up six. Reed also also won draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Corry Remy was credited with five saves for the Knights.

Calvin will now travel to the west coast for its spring trip. The Knights will open up their west coast swing with a Saturday game at the University of Puget Sound.
