CALEDONIA - Calvin baseball opened up its season on Tuesday, hosting Oberlin College at Davenport's Farmers Insurance Sports Complex.
The Knights split the doubleheader, dropping game one 12-7 before responding with a 9-6 win in game two.
In the first game, the Yeoman opened up the scoring in the 4th inning by plating four runs.
Calvin responded in the bottom half with five runs of its own. With three men on bases, freshman Nick Steiginga cleared the bases with a triple to left field.
The Knights added a run in the bottom of the 5th inning, then the teams traded runs in the 6th inning.
With Calvin up 7-5 heading into the top of the 7th, an Oberlin triple plated two runs to tie the game.
The Knights were unable to score a run of their own in the 7th, and in extra innings, the Yeoman's bats came to life as they scored five runs.
Calvin could not respond, and the visitors claimed the first game in eight innings, 12-7.
Senior Peter Cupery was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored in the first game. Steiginga went 1-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore Patrick Avila was 1-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and one run scored.
For Oberlin, Andrew Hutson was 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.
In game two, Oberlin picked up where it left off, opening up the ball game with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Three more runs for the Yeoman in the top of the 3rd inning put the visitors up 5-0.
Calvin got one run back in the 5th inning, conceded a run in the 6th, then scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Down 6-3, the Knights plated five runs in the 5th inning, two on a triple by sophomore Mike Kotva, to take an 8-6 advantage.
Calvin shut down the Yeoman in the 6th and 7th innings, adding an insurance run in the sixth, to claim a 9-6 victory and the first win of the season.
Sophomore Colton Wolfe was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored in the second game. Kotva finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. On the mound, senior Ben Guilfoyle collected the win, giving up two earned runs in five innings of work, while senior Austin Juza pitched two innings of scoreless ball to earn the save.
For Oberlin, Danny Baldocchi went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
The win is also the first at Calvin for first year head coach John Rypel.
"We saw a lot of resilience today. Our guys did a nice job of fighting back and never really quitting," said Rypel. "I really like, offensively, what we did. We battled and used the whole field for most of the day. Defensively, there is some stuff that we need to clean up, but a lot of it was stuff we expected - you can't simulate fly balls inside so that's probably our biggest issue - we'll get that cleaned up."
Calvin, 1-1 on the season, now looks forward to Saturday when it travels to Florida to play the first of six games in the Sunshine State.
The Knights will face Mount St. Joseph in a twinbill on Saturday, then play Trinity (Conn.) College in a doubleheader on Monday, followed by single games against Gallaudet and Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday and Wednesday.
MEN'S TENNIS
Cornerstone 7, Calvin 2
The visiting Golden Eagles of Cornerstone handed the Calvin men's tennis team its first loss of the season on Tuesday, defeating the Knights 7-2 in a match played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
