Calvin Basketball Players Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors - Women's Basketball Ranked Sixth in D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and High in NCAA III Statistics
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
FREELAND, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Breanna Verkaik its Player of the Week in women's basketball for games played through February 7.
Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals as the MIAA-leading Knights remained unbeaten with two conference victories. She scored 21 points, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and added five rebounds and three steals in a 91-68 victory over Olivet.
She then added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in an 80-59 road win at Adrian. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and third time in her career, shot 53 percent from the field (10 of 19), 61 percent from 3-point range (8 of 13) and 79 percent from the free-throw line (11 of 14) for the week.
Verkaik is currently the nation's leader in three-point field goal percentage, converting 50 percent (43 of 86) of her three-point attempts.
Calvin will host Alma Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

In the latest NCAA III statistics released this afternoon, Calvin is ranked first nationally in assists-per-game (20.8) and is second in scoring margin (25.7). Calvin is fourth in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.32) and three-point field goals made per game (9.1). The Knights are also 7th nationally in scoring offense (80.4 ppg).
MEN'S BASKETBALL
FREELAND, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin guard Jordan Brink its men's basketball Player of the Week for games played through February 7.
Brink, a senior from Dyer, Ind. (Illiana Christian HS), averaged 19.0 points, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots in leading Calvin to two wins that kept the Knights in a tie for first place in the MIAA.
He poured in 27 points and added six assists and three steals in an 83-77 win over Hope, then added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots in a 69-61 victory over Adrian. In the win over, Hope, Brink scored 12 of Calvin's final 17 points to lead the Knights back from a 69-66 deficit. In the win over Adrian, he came up with a game-sealing steal and layup inside the final minute of play.
Brink, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and sixth time in his career, shot 44 percent from the field (8 of 18), 67 percent from 3-point range (4 of 6) and 95 percent from the line (18 of 19) for the week.
Brink is currently ranked fifth nationally in free throw percentage (.910) and recently moved into 11th place on the Calvin career scoring list.
The Knights travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
