CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 24, 2015

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 181, Hope 113

The Calvin men's swimming and diving team made its 2015 Senior Day a day to remember as the Knights rolled to a 181-113 dual meet victory over rival Hope College Saturday afternoon ast the Venema Aquatic Center.

Calvin dominated the meet by taking first place in 13 individual events led by junior Mitch Schroder who was a triple-winner, claiming victories in the 200 freestyle (1:43.89), 50 freestyle (21.48) and 100 freestyle (47.02).

Freshman Skyler Fish was a double-winner, claiming wins in the 100 backstroke (52.86) and 200 backstroke (1:55.94). Other double-winners included sophomore Brett Stoughton in the 100 butterfly (51.70) and 200 butterfly (1:56.56) and junior Johnson Cochran in the 100 breaststroke (56.63) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.71).

In the distance events, junior Caleb Meindertsma won the 1,000 freestyle (9:58.84) while junior Aaron Venema took the 500 freestyle (4:56.62).

Freshman Tanner Vincent won the 200 IM (1:58.89) while sophomore Dirk Tanis took the one-meter diving competition (274.55).

Calvin also claimed wins in both relays as Fish, Cochran, Stoughton and sophomore Eli Holstege won the 200 medley relay (1:34.00) and Schroder, Venema, Fish and senior Alex Baumann won the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.22).

Saturday marked the final home competition for Calvin seniors Alex Baumann, Nathan Terschak, Andrew Vanderlei and Travis Vincent.
"We had a strong afternoon," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "The guys wanted to compete well against our rivals but also for the team and our seniors. Now it's back to work."

Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Championships slated for February 11-14 at the Holland Aquatic Center.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

On Senior Day, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team dug down deep and came away with a hard-fought 157-143 dual meet victory over rival Hope. Calvin's victory over the Flying Dutch took place Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center.

The meet featured back-and-forth action between the two rivals.

Hope opened with victories in the 200 medley relay and 1,000 freestyle but Calvin battled back with a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle and a 1-3-4 finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Freshmen Abby VanHarn and Rachel Mattson led the charge in the 200 free as VanHarn took first (1:58.30) and MAttson second (2:01.73). In the breaststroke, senior Lexi Scott pulled out a tough win in a time of 1:08.56 while sophomore Adrienne Wesselius was third (1:10.67) and sophomore Nicole Karl fourth (1:12.77).

Calvin came up with a 1-3 finish in the 200 butterfly with junior Alayna Gallegos winning in 2:11.81 while sophomore Karine Rose was third (2:25.06).

VanHarn and Mattson then went 1-2 in the 50 freesttyle with VanHarn winning in 24.86 and Mattson taking second in 25.26. Calvin then went 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle with VanHarn first (54.64), Mattson second (55.19) and Wesselius third (56.01).

The 200 breaststroke was another key with the Knights going 1-3-4. Scott won again, this time in a time of 2:30.20 with freshman Klara Oh third (2:34.37) and Wesselius fourth (2:36.44).

Heading into the final two events, Hope trailed by just three points but the Knights stepped up and sealed the win as Scott won the 200 IM (2:14.96) and the quartet of Mattson, junior Megan Schroder, Wesselius, and VanHarn won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:37.89.

Scott was one of five seniors competing in their final home meet on Saturday. Those seniors included Scott, Erika Waugh, Alex Dhaenens, Betsy Otten and Becca Mumby.

"It was quite an afternoon," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We received contributions from people all over the place and we needed every point. Our seniors today were terrific and showed great leadership. Our goal now is to refocus for the conference meet. I expect the conference meet to be very exciting and hard-fought."

Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Championships slated for February 11-14 at the Holland Aquatic Center.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 98, Illinois Tech 27

On Saturday evening the Calvin women's basketball team hosted the Scarlet Hawks of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Heading into the contest, the Knights were 16-0, 8-0 in the MIAA, while the Scarlet Hawks entered with a record of 0-16. Calvin maintained its perfect record, defeating the visitors 98-27.

The Knights took the lead early and didn't give it up for the remainder of the game. Hannah Acre scored the first bucket of the game and Breanna Verkaik followed with two consecutive layups to put the Knights up 6-0 early in the first half.

Minutes later, Calvin went on a twelve-point run with buckets from Anna Timmer, Kelly Bates, Kelsey Pollock, and Abby Springer.

Calvin maintained control of the game for the entire half, turning the ball over only six times. A last second jumper from Ali Spayde put the Knights up 43-15 at the conclusion of the first half.

The Knights came out of the locker room with lots of energy, going on an 11-0 run to start the second half. Calvin continued to roll for the rest of the game, outscoring the Scarlet Hawks 55-12 in the second half.

A strong team effort was crucial to Calvin's victory. All fourteen Knights got playing time in the nonconference win and all fourteen scored. Calvin's bench contributed fifty-nine points to the effort.

Kelsey Pollock led the Knights in scoring with fifteen points and also added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Natalie Kmet finished with thirteen points and five rebounds. Abby Springer had a solid all-around game, finishing with ten points, six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Anna Timmer chipped in nine points and snagged seven boards. Ali Spayde also dished out seven assists.

On Wednesday, the Calvin women's basketball team will travel to Albion College to take on the Britons (10-7 overall, 4-5 MIAA) in the second conference matchup this season between the two teams. Earlier this season, the Knights defeated the Brits 84-57. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

On Saturday afternoon, the Calvin men's basketball team hosted to Comets of Olivet College. Coming off of Wednesday's loss to the Trine University Thunder, Calvin's first conference defeat, the Knights bounced back and defeated the Comets 75-49.
The Knights came out strong, starting the game off with an 8-0 run and continued to control play for the remainder of the half.

Jordan Daley and Austin Parks were both key first half players for the Knights, contributing nine points and two rebounds apiece.
In the first half of the contest, Calvin shot 50.0% from the floor while Olivet shot 36.0%. The Knights were also 9-9 from the free throw line.
The home team headed into the locker room at the break with a comfortable 37-24 lead.
Calvin carried its momentum into the second half and was first to score in the second half. Jordan Brink quickly got a steal and finished on a fast break layup to give the Knights a fifteen-point lead.
Minutes later, the Knights went on another eight-point run to bring the score to 50-30. After a three-point bucket by Olivet's Kevin Woodson, Calvin answered by scoring nine more consecutive points, giving them a twenty-six-point lead (59-33).
The Knights continued to roll for the remainder of the game and earned themselves another conference victory to improve their record to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.
Jordan Daley led the Knights in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with fifteen points and seven boards. Austin Parks added fourteen points, three assists, and three rebounds. Brad Visser also contributed eleven points and snagged six rebounds.
The Knights outrebounded the visiting Comets 48-36. Calvin's bench was responsible for twenty-nine of the team's points.
On Wednesday evening, the Knights will host the Albion College Britons (8-9 overall, 1-5 MIAA) in another conference matchup. Tip-off is at 7:30 at Calvin College's Van Noord Arena.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams competed at the NAIA/NCAA Challenge on Saturday at Olivet Nazarene. The Calvin men's team took fourth with 69.5 points while the Calvin women's team placed sixth with 63.5 points.
