Men's Soccer Claims 7-0 Triumph Over Trine
MEN'S SOCCER
The nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team put its foot on the gas pedal on Wednesday and roared away with a 7-0 conference victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University.
Ranked 14th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Top 25 poll and 17th in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin raced out to a 5-0 halftime lead.
Calvin (9-2-0 overall, 5-0-0 MIAA) scored four goals in a span of 10 minutes in the first half and cruised from that point on.
Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) collected a career-high four goals in the win. Vegter now has 56 goals, 21 assists and 133 points in his Calvin career, ranking third on the Calvin career list in goals and points and 11th in assists.
Sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also notched two goals and two assists on the afternoon. Junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored the other goal for the Knights.
Lone assists were credited to sophomore Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS), freshman Micah Beard (Otsego/Otsego HS), junior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and freshman Mitch Stark (South Lyon/South Lyon HS).
Senior Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bisoph Foley HS) was credited with his second shutout victory of the season and eighth of his Calvin career.
Calvin finished with a 29-2 shots at goal advantage.
With the win, Calvin remains three points clear of second place Hope in the MIAA standings.
"I thought we moved the ball very well and when we do that, we create scoring chances," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "It was good to get off to a fast start and I thought our guys that came off the bench kept the energy level up which was good to see. We have a very challenging game coming up on Saturday so our goal is to keep our work rate at a high level."
Calvin will travel to Albion on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. MIAA match. Albion is currently in second place in the MIAA standings, six points behind Calvin.
