VOLLEYBALL

ALMA - The fifth-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team rolled to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 win at Alma Wednesday night inside Art Smith Arena. The Knights are now 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the MIAA heading into a six-day break from competition.

Calvin hit .295 as a team and took control early ripping through a fast-paced first set and then continuing the momentum in set two.

Alma (8-10 overall, 4-3 MIAA) stiffened in set three but the Knights were able to build a 24-20 lead. The Scots came up with the next two points, forcing Calvin to call timeout with a 24-22 lead. Calvin responded out the timeout with a match-ending kill by senior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS).

Junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) racked up 13 kills and 10 digs for Calvin while sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had 11 digs, three service aces and three block assists. Diepersloot had eight kills and senior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) six kills, two solo blocks and a .545 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tossed out 34 assists and was credited with eight digs and one service ace. Senior libero Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had 11 digs and one service ace.

"I thought that we played with heart and we played well together," said head coach Amber Warners. "Alma is not an easy place to play. Any time we pick up a three-set win here means we've had a real positive performance."

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Olivet at Van Noord Arena at 6:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Adrian 0

ADRIAN - Calvin picked up its second consecutive conference victory with a 2-0 win at Adrian Wednesday night at Adrian's Docking Stadium. Calvin is now 3-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the MIAA.

The first half featured little offensive action as each team was able to manage only one shot on goal. Calvin's one shot on goal found the back of the net however as junior Christina Drost (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) scored for the first time this year, one-timing a pass into the box from freshman teammate Anica Pausma (Tinley Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS). The goal came in the 37th minute of play and allowed Calvin to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Calvin then began to control the tempo early in the second half and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute on a goal by freshman Sydney Barcey (Cadillac/Cadillac HS). The goal was the first of Barcey's collegiate career and came on an assist from sophomore Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who led Barcey with a well-timed lob pass into the box.

Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Shelton (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Troy Intersect) held fast the rest of the way in recording her second shutout victory of the year. Shelton finished the game with two saves.

"This was a good win on the road," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "At this point of the year we are taking a one game at a time mentality and seeking improvement. Tonight was another positive step in the right direction."

Calvin returns home on Saturday to face Kalamazoo at noon. The Hornets are currently in second place in the MIAA standings.
