MEN'S SOCCER
North Central 1, Calvin 0
By Mark DeHaan
The Knights played host to North Central College on Saturday afternoon in their second matchup of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Calvin came in looking to build off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Ohio Wesleyan on Friday evening, while the Cardinals of North Central were looking for their first win of the season after dropping a 3-2 decision to Hope on Friday.
After 90 minutes, it was the Cardinals who held the upper hand by a 1-0 score despite being out-shot 24-8 for the game.
In the first half, the Knights applied early pressure to the North Central defense. Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) each had shots on goal in the opening fifteen minutes, but each Calvin shot was met by the Cardinal keeper Sebastian Garcia.
Defensively, junior goalie Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, ON/St. Augustine Catholic) punched away a pair of threatening attempts, and at half time, the game remained as it had started at 0-0. Calvin held a 7-4 shots advantage at the break.
In the second half, North Central got on the score board first. In the 66th minute, forward Lucas Habeeb found the back of the net, collecting a rebound off a wall of defenders after a free kick and putting the ball into the goal.
Down by a goal, the Knights pressed forward. In the 75th minute, Vegter received a long ball just outside the Cardinal's box, and turning and shooting in one motion, put a rocket on frame that was parried aside by Garcia.
Moving up from defense to forward, junior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) also had an opportunity on goal which came in the 82nd minute. Dribbling along the end line, Groenewold slipped past a defender and the goalie, but his shot was stopped by a defender standing at the near post.
In the 85th minute, another Groenewold attempt went just high and wide. Despite out-shooting North Central by a 17-4 margin in the second half, Calvin could not find the back of the net, and the Cardinals walked away as 1-0 winners.
The Knights also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks by the end of the game. Garcia made 13 saves in goal for North Central.
"I will credit North Central, they were committed to their game plan - we had the chances, we just didn't finish them," said head coach Ryan Souders.
The Knights, now 1-1 on the season, look forward to Friday when they travel to Illinois to face Wheaton College, of which head coach Ryan Souders is an alumnus. Wheaton was ranked 15th in the preseason top 25 poll.
Said Souders: "Wheaton is a good team. Our job is to regroup here, put in the work we need to next week, and get ourselves ready for a really good team on the road."

AUGUSTANA, IL - Calvin suffered its first defeat on the young season, falling 2-1 at Augustana College Saturday afternoon.
Ranked 24th nationally, Calvin (1-1-0) held a 1-0 halftime lead as junior Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) scored in the 16th minute of play.
The host Vikings (1-0-0) tied the game in the 52nd minute and then took the lead with a score in the 69th minute. Calvin was then able to muster only two shots in the final 20 minutes of play as the Knights attempted to equalize.
Augustana held an 11-10 shots at goal advantage including 8-3 in the second half.

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Simmons 0
Calvin 3, Roger Williams 0
(with reporting assistance from the Clarkson Sports Information Office)
Calvin upped its season record to 4-0 with victories over Simmons and Roger Williams at the Clarkson Classic. During the tournament, Calvin claimed victories over three opponents (New Paltz State, Clarkson and Roger Williams) that reached the 2013 NCAA III Tournament.
CALVIN-SIMMONS RECAP
Despite the early start, neither team was particularly groggy, especially Calvin, as the Knights finely tuned offense struck for a .375 hitting percentage in the match, including a .414 rate in the first set. Simmons had trouble with the Knights' size, but made some adjustments to make the third set a more interesting affair. Despite trailing in the early going, Simmons rallied all the way back to tie the set beyond the midway point, but Calvin was able to use its outsides effectively to finish off the match in three sets.
Maggie Kamp had a team-best 14 kills and hit .429 in the match for Calvin, but it was Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, ON/Toronto District Christian HS) who was the most efficient with a .667 hitting percentage (8-0-12). Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) ran the offense with 28 assists and 11 digs while Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) added in 10 digs and nine assists. For Simmons, Emmee Ashby had five kills and a pair of blocks, Andalynn Duke produced 14 assists and five digs and Alex Itasaka contributed 13 digs.
CALVIN - ROGER WILLIAMS RECAP
In the first set, Roger Williams and Calvin matched each other kill for kill all the way until the 21-21 mark. However, the Knights capitalized on a couple of miscues by Roger Williams, including the set-ender that flew wide of the line to lift Calvin to a 25-22 set win.
In the second set, Calvin jumped out to a seven-point edge, but a rotational point provided Roger Williams with a little momentum and they climbed back to within two (12-10). Following a service error that made the score 17-14, the Knights got kills from Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS), Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) to extend their lead to six and the team cruised from that point to capture the set.
The final set of the match saw Calvin take a 11-8 lead and turn it into a double-digit victory as Emily Crowe sparked a late run with back-to-back kills to force a Roger Williams timeout. At set point, Roger Williams scored a pair to delay the inevitable, but down by 11 at that point the Hawks could not rally all the way back.
Laura Danhoff had a dominant match for Calvin, hitting .733 with 11 kills in 15 swings. Maggie Kamp produced a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and Emily Crowe also hit .500 with seven kills and just one error in 12 attempts. Jenna Lodewyk ran the offense with 38 assists and also contributed 10 assists. Overall, Calvin hit .424 overall, including .520 in the third set (16-3-25).
Calvin will now prepare to open its league campaign on Tuesday night when it hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
