CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 30, 2014

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1 (OT)
By Mark DeHaan

The Calvin men's soccer team opened up its season at home on Friday afternoon, hosting Ohio Wesleyan University in the opening game of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Ohio Wesleyan's 2013 campaign saw the Battling Bishops finish 19-1-3, losing their only contest in the second round of the NCAA Tournament while the Knights went 14-5-1 in 2013.

One of Calvin's five losses last season was a 2-1 decision to Ohio Wesleyan, and on Friday, it was the Knights turning the tables as they took a 2-1 overtime game from the Battling Bishops.

In the first half, a lightning delay after the opening ten minutes of play provided an unexpected stoppage of play. After some slight rain, the teams were a little slow to get into the flow of the game, and it wasn't until the 21st minute that the Knights saw a good opportunity.

Just above the 18 yard box, senior Travis Vegter ripped a shot on frame that was punched away by the visiting keeper.

In the 31st minute, Ohio Wesleyan took the lead as a shot by the Battling Bishops deflected off the Calvin keeper and was put home by OWU forward Colton Bloecher.

Ohio Wesleyan took the 1-0 lead into halftime as well as a 6-5 advantage in shots.

In the second half, it was largely all Calvin. The Knights outshot the Battling Bishops 10-1 in the second stanza, including a goal by junior Nick Groenewold which tied the game up in the 61st minute. Sophomore Isky Van Doorne sent the ball into the box from the corner, and Groenewold rose above his defender to head the ball just over the goal line and tie the game.
In the final minute, Stephan Hooker won a ball in the midfield and found Taylor Pruis who was in on goal. Pruis's ensuing shot was just wide of the post, however.

Seconds later, Ohio Wesleyan had a one-on-one opportunity on the counter attack, but junior keeper Niko Giantsopoulos came up with a big save to keep the game knotted a 1-1 and push the game into overtime.

Less than two minutes into the overtime, a beautiful combination of passes led to the winning goal for the Knights. Senior Sean Broekhuizen sent Taylor Pruis to the endline, who immediately passed the ball into the middle for Hooker who put the ball into the corner of the net for the winning goal.

Calvin outshot OWU 16-7 for the game while also holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"OWU is a very good team, and they had our number the first half," said head coach Ryan Souders. "But I think once we settled in, played how we know how to play, and connected passes, we started creating more chances. That's a great win for us, a great come-from-behind win, and I think resolve and just moving the ball did us well today."

Calvin improves to 1-0 on the year while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 0-1. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will play North Central College at home at 4 p.m. In the other half of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament, Hope defeated North Central 3-2 Friday night.

Calvin 3, New Paltz State 1
Calvin 3, Clarkson 2

POTSDAM, NY - Facing a pair of teams that advanced to the NCAA III Tournament a year ago, the top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team dug down deep to gain a pair of victories at the Clarkson Classic Friday.

Calvin opened the tournament with a 25-11, 23-25, 25-19, 25-11 victory over a New Paltz State of New York team that reached the NCAA III Regional finals in 2013. The Knights then held off 20th-ranked Clarkson University 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 15-11. Clarkson was a national quarterfinalist in 2013.

In the win over New Paltz State, Calvin dominated the first and final sets but not withot a scare. Trailing 13-10 in the second set, New Paltz scored five of the next six points, the last coming on an ace by Maddie Zwickl to force a timeout by the Knights. New Paltz would lose its edge, but scored the last two points on kills from Alli Coleman and Alex Bizub to close out the set 25-23.

In the third set, the teams teetered back and forth with Calvin finally picking up a two-point lead at 17-15 to force a timeout for New Paltz. Though the Hawks would trail by only two a few points later (20-18), Calvin won five of the final six points to begin a dominant run that finished off the match in the next set.

Maggie Kamp led Calvin with 14 kills, but it was Emily Crowe that was the most dominant for the Knights with 13 kills and just one error in 19 swings (.632 hitting percentage). Ellie Diepersloot also struck for a .533 percentage (8-0-15) and Laura Danhoff added in nine kills as well. Freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk recorded 36 assists and four aces to go along with eight digs. Crowe also had five block assists and Kamp also chipped in 14 digs.

In the win against host Clarkson, Alumni Gymnasium was packed. Clarkson came away with a first set win as the two teams rocked back and forth with momentum, but midway through the sets, the Knights came from three points down to claim the lead. Calvin, down by three at 21-18, scored two straight but Victoria Kirkemo ended the run with a back-row kill that just stayed inside the line. From that point on, Clarkson was helped out in the waning points as Calvin had three straight service errors to give the Golden Knights the set 25-23.

In the second set, Calvin began to not only assert itself offensively, but kept the Golden Knights from scoring on offense by tipping many of their attempts and creating easier digs for the back row. After a kill from Kirkemo tied the set at 11-11, Calvin rattled off six straight points, forcing Clarkson to use both of its timeouts. The strategy worked briefly as Clarkson scored four of the next five, including kills from Sierra Rhoades, Adrienne Walker, and Kirstie Shurie, and the lead narrowed to three, but a reversal on one call swung the game from a three-point deficit to a five-point deficit late in the match (20-15, Calvin) and the Knights from Michigan held on for the set win.

The third set saw Clarkson jump out to a significant lead in the early going, but the advantage evaporated quickly as the set was tied at 11-11. Calvin gained a two-point edge at 21-19, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout, but the Knights finished off the set strong with solid play from the middle and a continued defensive effort that has become typical of Clarkson in the past few seasons.

In the fourth set, Calvin jumped out to an eight-point lead (11-3) and Clarkson closed the gap to four, but overall the Knights were able to control the set. Despite a timeout to stop the momentum, Calvin scored 10 of the final 13 points for a double-digit win.

As expected, the final set went back and forth in the opening points. Katrina Lane (Seattle, WA) recorded her third kill of the set at the break to give Clarkson an 8-7 edge, but Calvin scored the next four points to take the lead. Though Clarkson would cut it back to two (12-10), Maggie Kamp pounded the final two kills to close out the set.

Maggie Kamp delivered 18 kills for Calvin in the win while Ellie Diepersloot and sophomore Laura Danhoff had 12 kills and Crowe 10 kills. Freshman Jenna Lodewyk tallied 49 assists while senior Elise Biesboer had three service aces and 16 digs.

Calvin will face Simmons College and Roger Williams on the final day of competition on Saturday.
