The Calvin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have once again received academic awards from the College Swim Coaches Association of America. Both teams have received the CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award.
The Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester/term and in the semester/term of the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships (Winter/Spring).
The Calvin women's team recorded a 3.26 grade point average during the recently completed spring semester. The Calvin men's team recorded a 3.01 grade point average during the spring semester.
Individually, Calvin freshman Brett Stoughton was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American.
The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.
A native of Centerville, Indiana (Centerville HS), Stoughton was a qualifier for the 2014 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships where he was part of Calvin's honorable mention All-America 400 medley relay team that placed 12th. Stoughton's efforts helped Calvin place 21st in the final team standings.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Calvin College men's tennis team has received Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Honors. In addition, six members of the Calvin men's tennis team have received ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete honors.
The Calvin men's tennis team was named a 2014 ITA All-Academic Team for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above. Calvin had had a 3.453 cumulative GPA this year.
The members of the Calvin men's tennis team that received individual honors included freshmen Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomores Klaas Walhout (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd HS) and seniors John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Stephen Healy (Twin Lakes, IN/Twin Lakes HS).
To receive the award, individuals must earn a varsity letter in tennis, carry at least a 3.5 grade point average for the 2013-14 academic year, and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
MEN'S GOLF
Calvin senior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) came up with a memorable three-round performance at the Kent County Amateur Open this past weekend.
Competing in the tournament at the L.E. Kaufman Golf Course in Wyoming, Michigan, Van Noord took third individually with a three-round total of 214 (68-72-74). His third place individual finish is believed to be the highest at the annual tournament by a Calvin golfer.
Recent Calvin golf graduate Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also made the three-round final cut and placed in the top 30.
Also making the final cut and placing inside the top 30 was former Calvin men's basketball and Calvin men's golf standout Ricky Shilts.
Finally of note, former Calvin men's basketball standout Mark Hoogewind took third in the Senior Championship with rounds of 72 and 79.
