MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
The 2013-14 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 149 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The Calvin list is just two shy of matching last year's Calvin record total of 151.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2013-14 academic year.
A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.
This year's Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.
The 10 Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Stephanie Bennett (Belvidere, IL/Christian Life Center), Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS), Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS), Stephen Healy (Monticello, IN/Twin Lakes HS), Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS), Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS), John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS), Rebekah Wissink (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter Academy) and Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Also of note, three brother from Calvin all received mention on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. The three brothers are Mark, Allen and Luke Bosscher, all graduates of Grand Rapids Christian High School and members of the Calvin men's lacrosse team.

MIAA TEAM GPA AWARD
The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2013-14 school year, seven of Calvin's athletic teams achieved this distinction.
Five of Calvin's women's teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while two of the men's teams also achieved the feat. Calvin's teams receiving the honor are as follows; women's soccer, women's cross country, women's volleyball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's track and field and men's tennis.
Under the direction of Mark Recker, the Calvin women's soccer team had the top team GPA of any team in the MIAA with a team GPA of 3.676.
Led by Brian Diemer, the women's cross country team also continued a remarkable streak, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.530. The Calvin women's cross country team is one of only two teams joining the Hope women's cross country team as the only teams to receive the award all 16 years it has been presented.
Bret Otte and John Ross had both of their women's teams receive the award for the ninth straight year. Otte's women's track and field team posted an average of 3.368. Ross's women's basketball squad posted a grade point average of 3.443.
Dr. Amber Warners saw her women's volleyball team honored for the 12th time with a grade point average of 3.455.
The men's cross country team was also under the leadership of Brian Diemer and earned the award for the eighth time with a team GPA of 3.358. John Ross saw his men's tennis team receive the award for the eighth time, recording a 3.453 GPA.
