Calvin Lands Trio on Capital One Academic All-America Teams
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Three members of the Calvin men's and women's track and field program have received Capital One Academic All-American honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
On the women's side, senior Nicole Michmerhuizen has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team while senior Hilary Banning has been named to the second team. On the men's side, junior Erik Holstege has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America third team.
Holstege is from Keswick, Virginia. He is a graduate of Monticello High School. This year, Holstege was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Performer and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team for the second straight year. At the MIAA Field Day, Holstege claimed league titles in the triple jump and 110 high hurdles while also placing second in the long jump, fourth in the high jump and eighth in the 200 meters while also running on Calvin's third place 4x100 meter relay team.
A chemistry major at Calvin, Holstege carries a 3.78 grade point average.
Banning is from Whitinsville, Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Whitinsville Christian High School.
A three-time All-MIAA selection in track and field, Banning was the MIAA champion in the triple jump and long jump this spring and later qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships triple jump after posting a school-record jump of 39-3 3/4. At the NCAA III Championships, she placed 16th.
Banning was graduated from Calvin this spring with a degree in nursing while posting a grade point average of 3.94.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen is receiving Capital One Academic All-America honors for the third consecutive year. She was a third team selection in 2012 and a first team honoree in 2013.
Michmerhuizen completed a superb distance running career last month at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. At the national meet, she took second in the 10,000 meters to claim the fifth NCAA III All-America berth of her track and field career. At the 2014 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships, she placed second in the 5,000 meters and fourth in the 3,000 meters. She was also the national runner-up in the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA III Indoor Championships and claimed the national title in the 10,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA III Outdoor Championships.
Michmerhuizen was a three-time All-MIAA selection in track and field, claiming league titles in the 10,000 meters twice and the 5,000 meters once.
She also made her mark on the cross country course, earning first team All-MIAA honors twice and receiving the MIAA MVP award in 2012. She helped Calvin finish seventh as a team this past fall, finishing 48th individually at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships.
Michmerhuizen was graduated from Calvin last week while posting a grade point average of 3.99. She carried a demanding double-major of biochemistry and chemical engineering and was the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship which she will use in attending the University of Michigan next fall. At the University of Michigan, she will pursue a Ph.D in pharmacology.
Over the course of the 2013-14 academic year, Calvin claimed five Capital One Academic All-America citations. This fall, Travis Vegter (men's soccer) and Maggie Kamp (women's volleyball) were first team selections.
Calvin has now had its scholar-athletes receive 107 Capital One Academic All-America citations. Calvin's total of 107 ranks in the top-30 all-time amongst All NCAA and NAIA insitutions at any level. Calvin also ranks sixth on the all-time NCAA Division III list. In addition, Calvin has recorded 76 Capital One Academic All-America citations since 2000 which also ranks in the top 10 for all NCAA and NAIA levels.
