Matt Schepel Named to D3baseball.com's All-Mideast Region First Team;
Women's Track and Field Team Moves Up in National Rankings;
Calvin Athletes Participate in Southwest Michigan Special Olympics Event
BASEBALL
Calvin College senior Matt Schepel has been named the D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region first team.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Schepel batted .394 this year with 38 runs batted, 36 runs scored, 33 base on balls and 21 extra-base hits.
He had 12 doubles, four triples and five home runs and d a slugging percentage of .659 and an on-base percentage of .540. He was also 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts and compiled a .950 fielding percentage while splitting time between second base, shortstop, third base, designated hitter and the outfield.
His season base on balls total was a new Calvin single-season record while his runs batted in total matched his own Calvin single-season mark originally set back in 2008 and later tied by Nate Pocock in 2009.
Schepel finished his Calvin career as the school's all-time leader in total bases (298), hits (177), runs scored (134), runs batted in (130), home runs (19), doubles (33) and base on balls (108) and is tied for the all-time lead in triples (11).
During the year, he was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week once and was also named MIAA Position Player of the Week once. In addition, he was also named to the All-MIAA first team in baseball.
Schepel helped the Calvin baseball team finish 28-16 overall, matching the second-highest single-season win total in program history.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS STORY
Calvin hosted the Southwest Michigan Special Olympics Spring Games. Over 100 Calvin studetn-athletes participated as volunteers in the event.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin women's track and field team has moved up two spots in the national rankings. The Knights are ranked 23rd in this week's USTFCCA Division III Top 25 poll.
Last week Calvin cracked the top 25 for the first time in more than a month as the Knights were ranked 25th.
Calvin will be sending three individuals to the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
Senior Nicole Michmerhuizen will compete in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters while senior Hilary Banning will compete in the triple jump. Junior Sarah Danner will also compete in the 10,000 meters.
Action begins on Thursday.
