MORE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL - With one day of competition left in the two-day decathlon, Calvin junior Erik Holstege is in position to make a run at a qualifying spot for the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Holstege is competing in the decathlon at the North Central College Gregory Invitational.
Through five events, Holstege has a first day total of 3,631 points. A native of Keswick, Virginia, Holstege will likely need to be over 6,400 points at the conclusion of the decathlon
competition to assure himself of a spot in the event for next week's national meet at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Holstege hit or came close to career-bests in all five of his events on Tuesday.
He opened with a career-best time of 11.23 in the 100 meters and followed with a long jump of 21-9. He followed with a throw of 41-6 in the shot put and then produced a season-best mark of 6-2 in the high jump. He closed out the day with a career-best time of 51.98 in the 400 meters.
"Erik had a very good opening day but there is still work to be done," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "The great thing is that he has put himself in position to reach his goals. With the decathlon, you can't look too far down the road. You have to focus on one event at a time. It's a cliche' but in a 10-event competition, that's the kind of mental preparation that is required to succeed."
Holstege will continue the decathlon competition on Wednesday, competing in the 110 high hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1,500 meters.
