Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Adrian - Wins Weekend Series and Finishes Second in League Standings / All-Conference Honors Announced for Women's Lacrosse, Men's Tennis and Women's Tennis

ADRIAN - The Calvin baseball team gained a doubleheader split at Adrian, dropping the opener 13-4 before coming back to win the nightcap 5-4. With the split, Calvin takes 3 out of 4 games in the weekend series and finishes in second place in the final MIAA regular season standings at 18-10.
The Knights also gain the number-two seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and are scheduled to host number-three seed Hope next Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament. Adrian is the top seed and will host a first round game on Wednesday and then host the remainder of the tournament on Thursday and Friday.
In Saturday's opener, Calvin could not withstand a 15-hit attack by the host Bulldogs (26-13, 21-7 MIAA) who scored eight runs in the fourth inning to vault into a commanding 12-1 lead. Calvin (26-14 overall) scored three runs in the sixth but scored no more after that to drop the lopsided affair.
Senior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the loss in two innings of work to fall to 5-1 on the year as he allowed four runs of which only one was earned.
Calvin collected seven hits - all singles. Sophomore Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) had two runs batted in.
In game two, Calvin won its 10th one-run decision of the year as senior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) picked up his second win of the year while sophomore Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) came on to record his first collegiate save.
Calvin took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as senior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled in a run and Bouma brought Schepel home with a clutch two-out single.
Adrian scored a run in the second and two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead but the Knights responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-3. Schepel tied the score with an RBI double. Freshman Colt Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) brought Schepel home with a double of his own and then scored on another single by Bouma.
Adrian scratched across a run in the fifth to make it a one-run game. With one out in the sixth, Wasserberger came on in relief of VanderWall. Wasserberger kept the Bulldogs from scoring, leaving the bases full with two outs.
Wasserberger then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the win.
Junior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs in the win for Calvin while Schepel and Bouma were both 3-for-4 at the plate as well. Schepel had a pair of doubles to bring his career total to 32 and moving him past former teammate Chris Blacklidge and into first place on the Calvin career list.
Junior Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) also went 3-for-4 in game two, raising his season batting average to .355.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The All-MIAA women's lacrosse teams have been announced and five members of the Calvin women's lacrosse team have received all-conference honors.
Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are seniors Mary Hoogstra and Michelle Holwerda and freshman Audrey Grabowski. Named to the All-MIAA second team are junior Karissa Reed and freshman Emily Cefaratti.
Hoogstra is the only individual to have received all-conference accolades before. She was named to the 2013 All-MIAA second team. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Hoogstra was a stalwart on defense this year for the Knights, causing 17 turnovers and scooping up 44 ground balls. In conference play she was second in the MIAA in ground balls per-game (3.88). She also joined the offensive attack to score three goals. She was also named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once.
Holwerda is also from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She made the move from midfield to the attack position this spring and flourished, scoring 19 goals and amassing a team-high 31 assists. In conference play, she led the MIAA in assists (22) and finished sixth in points-per-game (4.75).
Grabowski is another West Michigan product as she hails from East Grand Rapids and is a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School. Grabowski was also a key scoring cog for the Knights at the attack position this spring, scoring a team-leading 43 goals along with seven assists for 50 points. In conference play, she scored 30 goals and finished fifth in goals-per-game (3.75) and ninth in points-per-game (4.12).
A midfielder, Reed is from Greenville and is a graduate of Greenville High School. During the year, Reed tallied 32 goals, six assists and 38 points. She picked up a team-leading 59 ground balls forced 12 turnovers and was successful on 74.6 percent of her shots on goal. In conference play, she led the MIAA in ground balls per-game (4.88). She was also named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once.
Cefaratti is from Hinsdale, Illinois. She is a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School. She was also a part of a Calvin offensive attack that averaged 13.07 goals-per-game. Cefaratti led the Knights in points (51) and goals (35) and also tallied 16 assists.
Calvin finished the year 9-6 overall and in third place in the MIAA standings with a 6-2 conference record. The Knights reached the four-team MIAA Tournament for the first time before bowing to Alma 15-8 in the semifinals.
MEN'S TENNIS
The yearly all-conference awards have been announced by the MIAA and two members of the Calvin men's tennis team have received post-season accolades.
Senior John Strikwerda has received the prestigious Lawrence Green Scholar-Athlete Award while senior Loukas Peterson has been named to the All-MIAA second team.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Strikwerda is receiving an award that is award is based on academic performance in memory of the late Lawrence "Doc" Green, physical educator, athletic trainer and coach at Hope College.
A four-year member of the Calvin men's tennis program, Strikwerda has been a regular member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. A chemistry major at Calvin, Strikwerda was named a prestigious Goldwater Scholar at Calvin last spring. He has served as a research assistant under Calvin chemistory professor Dr. Roger DeKock, researching the atom and its electronic structure.
On the tennis court, he stepped into a leadership role this spring, moving into Calvin's lineup at either number four or five singles. He compiled an overall season singles record of 14-8 including 4-2 in conference play.
Strikwerda is the second member of his family to receive a prestigous academic award from the MIAA in tennis. His older sister Rachel (Strikwerda) Van Haitsma was the recipient of the Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award in women's tennis in 2010.
A native of Brentwood, Tennessee, Peterson (Brentwood HS) was also a key senior on this year's Calvin team, consistently playing at number-one singles after playing at a lower flight throughout his first three years at Calvin. Peterson was 4-12 overall in singles play against opponent number-one's including 1-4 in league play.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
For the third consecutive year, Calvin College junior Megan Visser has been named to the All-MIAA second team. A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Visser served as Calvin's number-one singles player this spring as well as a member of Calvin's number-one doubles team.
At number-one singles this spring, Visser compiled an overall record of 8-13. She was 4-4 against conference opponents.
Competing alongside teammate Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian High School) at number-one doubles, Visser posted a doubles mark of 8-14 including 3-5 in conference play.
As a team, Calvin finished in fifth place in the final league standings with a 4-4 conference mark.
