Women's Golf Takes Third at Final MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifer - Fourth in Final Spring Standings;
Claire Spoelhof Named MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week;
Cory Laster Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in Baseball

WOMEN'S GOLF

MARSHALL - The Calvin women's golf team closed out its 2014 season with a third place finish at the final MIAA NCAA spring qualifier. Monday's tournament was hosted by Olivet at the Medalist Golf Club. Calvin posted a team score of 354 on Monday.

The Knights finished fourth in the final cumulative three-round 54-hole spring tournament with 1,092 strokes. Olivet took first place with a three-round total of 972 and receives the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Olivet took first place on Monday with a team score of 331 strokes with Saint Mary's second with 349, Calvin third at 354 and Trine fourth at 362.

Calvin senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) closed out her sterling Calvin career with a round of 81 on Monday that was good for a tie for second place individually.

Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had a good day as well with an 85 that placed her fifth individually.

Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had a 91 while freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) had a 97 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) a 98.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin's Claire Spoelhof its Player of the Week in women's tennis for matches played through April 27.
Spoelhof, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), won both her matches at No. 2 singles in straight sets and both her matches at No. 1 doubles for the week. She posted singles victories over Saint Mary's, 7-6, 6-4 and Trine, 6-0, 6-1.

She also teamed up with Megan Visser to post doubles wins over Saint Mary's and Trine by matching 8-5 scores. Spoelhof is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

BASEBALL

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin lefthander Cory Laster its Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 26.
Laster, a senior from Ludington (Ludington), fired a one-hitter for his second shutout in MIAA play this spring, pitching the Knights to a 2-0 victory over Trine. He walked only one and struck out two in going the distance. Laster is being honored as Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and in his career.
Laster is currently 5-2 on the year with a 3.22 earned run average. He has struck out 28 batters and walked only 15.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Illinois Tech for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
