Track and Field Teams Post Big Weekend Performances at Hillsdale and Aquinas Meets;

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
It was a weekend to remember for the Calvin women's track and field team as the Knights sent members of the team to compete at the Hillsdale Gina Relays and the Ernie Mousseau Classic hosted by Aquinas College.
At Hillsdale Thursday and Friday, Calvin's distance runners ran wild. Senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) put another entry into her amazing career diary of performance as she took second in the 5,000 meters with a school record time of 16:36.36, breaking the previous record of 16:40.25 set by Jodi Hoekstra in 2012. The time by Michmerhuizen places her third on the national qualifying list in the event.
Junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) then stepped up and ripped off a career-best time of 35:56 in the 10,000 meters that places her 12th on the national qualifying list.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase invite race, Calvin featured a terrific trio as sophomore McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) and junior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) had career-best times of 11:17.51 and 11:17.54 respectively while senior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) was close behind in a time of 11:19.08.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase open race, freshman Kristen Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) dropped more than 10 seconds off her personal-best time of 11:55.30.
At the Ernie Mousseau Classic, senior Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) continued to sparkle, winning the 100 meters in a season-best time of 12.37 while placing second in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 25.54.
In the 400 meters, senior Stephanie Bennett (Rockford, IL/Christian Life Center HS) took first place in a season-best time of 58.97.
Senior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) then clocked a season-best time to win the 800 meters in a time of 2:16.15.
In the hurdle events, the Verkaik sisters cruised. Sophomore Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took fourth in a season-best time of 15.61 while junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.30. Junior Kelley Tuinenga (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:07.07.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the quartet of junior Miriam Rienstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Lora Huizingh (Byron Center/South Christian HS), freshman Morgan Hayden (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) and senior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) took first place in a time of 4:04.72.
In the field events, senior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) took second in the long jump (17-8 1/4) and then uncorked a career-best mark of 38-7 3/4 in the triple jump that currently places her eighth on the national qualifying list.
In the javelin, senior Lauren Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took second with a throw of 120-9 while junior Christina Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) was second in the pole vault with a height of 10-6 1/4.
Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Field Day scheduled to be held May 1 and 2 at Alma College.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's track and field team sent competitors to both the Hillsdale Gina Relays and to the Aquinas College Ernie Mousseau Classic this weekend.
At the Hillsdale Gina Relays Thursday and Friday, Calvin's distance runners ran well. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase invite, junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) took first place with a career-best time of 9:05.47. His time places him sixth on the current NCAA III qualifying list.
Junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) also ran well in the 5,000 meters, cracking the 15 minute barrier with a time of 14:58.12. Senior Philip Spitzer (Kingsley/Buckley HS) also had a season-best effort in clocking a time of 31:42.38 in the 10,000 meters.
At the Ernie Mousseau Classic held at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids Friday and Saturday, a number of Calvin sprinters and field event athletes had season-best performances.
In the sprints, freshman Blake DeGroot (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) took first place in the 400 meters with a time of 50.59. In the 200 meters, sophomore Cole Evans (Chicago, IL/Walther Lutheran HS) had a season-best time of 22.64 that was good for fourth place. He also had a season-best time of 11.27 in the 100 meters.
In the 800 meters, freshman Andrew Woznick (Rockford/Rockford HS) had a season-best time of 1:57.44 that was good for sixth place. In the 1,500 meters, senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) was second with a time of 1:53.60.
In the 110 high hurdles, junior Erik Holstege (Keswick, VA/Monticello HS) took second with a season-best time of 14.94 while also winning the long jump with a season-best mark of 22-6 1/4.
Calvin sophmore Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) won the shot put with a throw of 49-7 1/4 while senior Ben de Waal Malefyt (Midland Park, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was fourth in the discus with a toss of 159-3.
Senior Andrew Dykstra (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) won the javelin with a season-best throw of 164-0.
In the high jump, freshman Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took third with a season-best mark of 6-2 3/4.
The highlight of Saturday came from sophomore Lucas Wolters (Vincennes, IN/South Knox HS) who took first place in the pole vault with a career-best height of 15-5 that currently places him 25th on the national qualifying list. Freshman Nathan Marcus (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had a season-best mark of 14-5 1/4 that was good for second place.
Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Field Day scheduled to be held May 1 and 2 at Alma College.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
KALAMAZOO - The Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up a 20-12 victory at Kalamazoo on Saturday in its regular season finale. The Knights (9-5 overall, 6-2 MIAA) finish third in the final MIAA regular season standings and will travel to Alma next Wednesday for their first-ever MIAA Tournament game. Wednesday's game at Alma is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Bahlke Stadium.
As has been the case as of late, Calvin got off to a blazing start, outscoring the Hornets 8-0 to open the game.
Kalamazoo (5-9 overall, 2-5 MIAA) cut the Calvin momentum late in the first half, scoring four goals over the final 11 minutes to trail 11-4 at halftime.
The host Hornets closed to within 15-9 midway through the second half but the Knights countered with five unanswered goals to build a commanding 20-9 lead - en route to the win.
Freshman Audrey Grabowski (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) scored a season-high five goals, doing so on just eight shots. Senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a big day with three goals and two assists.
Junior Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was also a force with a career-high four goals.
Sophomore Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS) added two goals and one assist while junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) also had two goals and one assist.
Freshman Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) had three goals to raise her team-leading goal total to 33.
Junior Paige Noordyke (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also added one goal.
Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakdale, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) came up with 10 saves in goal for the Knights.
Calvin has now won five of its last six games.
MEN'S LACROSSE
OLIVET - The Calvin men's lacrosse team closed out its 2014 season with a 21-7 loss at Olivet on Saturday. The Knights finish 2-12 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA.
Calvin received three goals from freshman Joel Schaefer (Clarkson, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS) and single goals from freshman Chris Griffin (Howell/Hartland HS), junior Jonathan VandenEnde (Huntsville, ON/Huntsville HS), freshman Logan Dykgraaf (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and junior Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Griffin also had a pair of assists.
Sophomore Tyler DeKryger (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) had a team-high seven ground balls.
Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had had seven saves in 45 minutes of action while freshman Jake Horstman (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also saw time in goal over the final 15 minutes of action.
Schaefer finished the year with a team-leading 19 goals while Marco had 18 goals and Griffin 16 goals.
WOMEN'S GOLF
MARSHALL - The Calvin women's golf team competed at the second MIAA NCAA spring qualifier. The tournament was hosted by Olivet on Saturday at The Medalist Golf Club.
Calvin took fourth with a team score of 364 strokes. Host Olivet cruised to a first place score of 316 with Saint Mary's second at 344 and Trine third at 347.
Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin with an 83 that was good for a tie for fifth place individually.
Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had an 89 to finish tied for 14th. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) was next with a 95, sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) added a 97 while freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) had a round of 100.
Adrienne Plourde of Olivet was the medalist on Saturday with a round of 76.
The final round of competition will take place on Monday at the Medalist Golf Club with Olivet once against serving as host.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Trine 2
The Calvin women's tennis team closed out its 2014 season with a 7-2 conference victory over visiting Trine University Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. The Knights finish in fifth place in the final league standings at 4-4 while Trine slipped to sixth place at 3-5.
Saturday also marked the final collegiate competition for Calvin's lone senior Bethany Zoerhof. The Holland Christian High School graduate made the most of her final day of collegiate tennis, winning a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision at number-three singles.
She also combined with freshman Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) to win 8-1 at number-two doubles.
Calvin (6-11 overall) swept the three doubles flights as junior Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and sophomore Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won 8-5 at number-one doubles and freshman Liz Turner (Audobon, PA/Delaware County Christian HS) and junior Courtney Selvius (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) won 8-3 at number-three doubles.
Spoelhof was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at two singles, Benzel a 6-4, 6-1 winner at four singles and Selvius a 6-1, 6-4 winner at six singles.
"It was nice to close out our season on a winning note, especially for Bethany who is our only senior and has worked so hard within the Calvin women's tennis program the last four years," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "This team was young but it had a lot of heart and Bethany did a great job with her leadership in making sure this team played hard every match."
MEN'S TENNIS
The Calvin men's tennis team closed out its dual match earlier this week but on Friday and Saturday, members of the squad competed in the MIAA Flighted Tournament at Hope College.
Calvin senior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) reached the semifinals of the A Singles Flight before finishing third.
Freshman Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached the C Singles Flight Consolation final before bowing in a tight match 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles action, senior Stephen Healy (Twin Lakes, IN/Twin Lakes HS) and junior Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) fell in the third place match of the A Doubles Flight 8-4.
Strikwerda and sophomore Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremnd HS) reached the consolation finals of the A Doubles Flight before falling 8-4.
