SOFTBALL

NOTRE DAME, In - The Calvin softball team split a conference doubleheader at Saint Mary's on Wednesday, winning the opener 8-6 in come-from-behind fashion before falling 5-4 in game two as the Belles used a come-from-behind effort of their own.

Game one featured back-and-forth action as Calvin grabbed an early 2-0 lead with Saint Mary's jumping back in front 4-2 with a run in the first, three in the second and one more in the fourth.

Trailing 5-2, Calvin (18-8 overall, 6-2 MIAA) picked up two runs in the fourth as sophomore Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led off with her second home run of the spring and sophomore Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

The Belles scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead but in the top of the sixth, Gildea blasted a three-run homer to put the Knights on top 7-6. Calvin added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as senior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) delivered an RBI single.

Senior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) then pitched a scoreless seventh to nail down the win.

Junior Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-4 in the win as did senior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS). Two of Agren's hits were doubles.

In game two, Gildea ripped a two-run homer in the first inning for his sixth round-tripper of the spring.

Calvin trailed 3-2 when it scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, using a pair of errors by Saint Mary's and a sacrifice bunt by junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) to take a 4-3 lead.

The Belles (11-11 overall, 3-5 MIAA)) regained the lead in the top of the fifth, striking for a two-out, two-run RBI single that put Saint Mary's up 5-4.

Calvin placed two runners aboard in the sixth but could not score and then went down in order in the seventh.

Callow took the loss for Calvin to fall to 11-4 on the year. Jakus, Riemersma and senior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) all had two hits apiece for Calvin in defeat.

Calvin will now prepare to host nationally-ranked and league-leading Trine on Saturday in a conference twinbill at Calvin's Gainey Field. The Thunder are ranked fifth nationally and have won 40 consecutive conference games.

WOMEN'S GOLF

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Calvin women's golf team participated in the first MIAA NCAA spring qualifying tournament on Wednesday and finished fourth with a team score of 374 strokes.

Wednesday's round was hosted by Saint Mary's at the Blackthorne Golf Club. The round was the first of three that make up the 54-hole MIAA NCAA spring tournament with the final two 18 hole rounds set to be hosted by Olivet next weekend.

Olivet took first in Wednesday's tournament with a team score of 325 with Saint Mary's close behind at 329, Trine third at 359 and Calvin fourth.

Calvin's top finishers were sophomores Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) and Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) with rounds of 93 while senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) had rounds of 94 while freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) had a 99.

Adrienne Plourde of Olivet was Wednesday's medalist with a round of 73.

MEN'S TENNIS

ADRIAN - The men's tennis team dropped its third consecutive 5-4 decision to a conference opponent on Wednesday, falling 5-4 at Adrian. The Knights are now 5-10 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.
Doubles play proved to be a pivotal point in the match as the Bulldogs took two of the three points. Junior Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and senior Stephen Healey (Twin Lakes, IN/Twin Lakes HS) came up with Calvin's lone doubles point, winning 8-6 at three doubles.

Calvin then split the six singles matches, allowing Adrian to pull out the win.

Senior Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) pulled out a tough three-set win at number-one singles while sophomore Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremnd HS) won at four singles and senior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won at five singles.

Strikwerda hit the double-digit mark in singles victories for the first time in his collegiate career, upping his season record to 10-6.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

The Calvin women's lacrosse team is off to a 6-4 start after finishing 4-12 a year ago. One of the reasons behind Calvin's success this year has been senior captain Mary Hoogstra who was recently named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Calvin sports information student assistant Mark DeHaan recently caught up with Hoogstra and filed the following feature story: http://calvinknights.com/sports/wlax/2013-14/releases/2014041695n5jm
