BASEBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin lefthander Cory Laster its Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 13.
Laster, a senior from Ludington (Ludington HS), did not allow a run in 8-2/3 innings for the week, picking up a win and a save. He retired all five batters he faced to get the save in a 3-2 win over Kalamazoo, then fired a four-hit complete game shutout as the Knights blanked Albion, 1-0. Laster struck out six batters and walked only two for the week. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Calvin is scheduled to return to the diamond on Tuesday when it face Aquinas in a non-conference doubleheader at Kimble Stadium in Wyoming starting at 2 p.m.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin defender Mary Hoogstra its Defensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse for games played through April 13.
Hoogstra, a senior from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), scooped up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers for the Knights as they won two MIAA games. She picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers in an 18-10 victory over Olivet and added three ground balls in an 18-5 win over Trine. Hoogstra is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion at 1 p.m.
MORE BASEBALL
Calvin junior Grant Van Putten's walk-off steal of home in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Albion has caught national and local attention.

SOFTBALL
Van Putten's walk-off steal of home was not the only dramatic play of the weekend in Calvin athletics. On Friday night, senior Lina Avila delivered junior Christie VanderMeer from third base with a walk-off squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-3 victory at Adrian.
