SOFTBALL
Calvin 4, Adrian 3
ADRIAN - In a game that took nine days to complete, it took Calvin's all-time home run leader to lay down a squeeze bunt and deliver the Knights to a 4-3 victory over the Adrian College Bulldogs Friday evening.
Friday's game began on April 2 and was the second game of a doubleheader. Calvin won the first game of the twinbill 4-3 but the game also went 11 innings. In game two, Calvin held a 3-1 lead but Adrian scored a run in the top of the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs when darkness haulted play.
The date to resume play ended up coming on April 11. Calvin traveled two-and-a-half hours to Adrian with the knowledge that it would resume the game wedged in a bases-loaded jam.
Calvin senior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) was able to wiggle out of the jam in the pitcher's circle as she went to a 3-1 count on Adrian batter Rebecca Greco but then got Greco to hit into a fielder's choice to Calvin shortstop Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
As the home team in the second game of the doubleheader, Calvin (15-7 overall, 3-1 MIAA) then had a chance to win it and the Knights made good on the opportunity.
Junior Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) laid down a bunt down the third base line that turned into a single. Senior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved VanderMeer to third and Pollock to second, setting the stage for a frantic finish.
Up stepped to the plate cleanup hitter Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS). Avila leads the Knights this year in home runs (7) and extra-base hits (11). She is also Calvin's career leader in home runs (32).
After taking one pitch however, Avila was given the squeeze bunt sign and she delivered, dropping a bunt that the Adrian pitcher was unable to get to in time as VanderMeer roared in from third base to score the winning run.
Callow picked up the victory for Calvin to up her season record to 8-3. Avila finished the game wtih two runs batted in including a solo home run in the fourth that took place back on April 2. Riemersma also had a double and an RBI.
Calvin will have a short time to rest as the Knights host Kalamazoo on Saturday in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Gainey Field.
