ALBION - The Calvin baseball team split a conference doubleheader at Albion Thursday afternoon, winning the opener 5-3 in eight innings before dropping the nightcap 4-1. Calvin is now 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA.
In the opener, Calvin used late-inning heroics to clame a victory in extra innings. The Knights trailed 2-0 but scored two runs in the top of the sixth as senior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in junior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with an RBI single and junior Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) rapped an RBI double that plated Schepel.
In the eighth, Calvin scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Knights managed just one hit in the rally but two batters walked and two more were hit by a pitch. Sophomore Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had the lone hit of the inning for Calvin and later scored.
Albion came back to score one run in the bottom half of the inning and had the tying runs on board when senior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was able to get the final out of the game and earn his fourth save of the season. Sophomore Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) got the win in relief of junior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) to pick up his first victory of the season.
Calvin had seven hits in the win including two by Kraai.
In game two, Albion (10-14 overall, 6-8 MIAA) scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Schepel doubled and scored on a single by sophomore Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS).
In the fifth, Calvin had runners on first and third with no outs but a runner was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze bunt attempt. Albion then turned around and scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth including one on a squeeze bunt of its own to build a 4-1 lead.
Calvin placed two runners on base in the sixth but did not score and then went quietly in the seventh.
Junior Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin, allowing nine hits in six innings of work to fall to 2-2 on the year. Bouma had two of Calvin's five hits.
