SOFTBALL
Calvin 6, Concordia (WI) 3
Calvin 2, Hamilton (NY) 1

CLERMONT, FL - The Calvin softball team improved to 5-3 on the year with a pair of victories Wednesday afternoon. Calvin opened the day with a 6-3 win over Concordia-Wisconsin and then held off Hamilton of New York 2-1.

In the win over Concordia, Calvin led 3-1 when freshman Maddie Teune (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) and delivered a bases-loaded double that scored three runs. Senior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) put the Knights on the board with an RBI single in the first and freshman Cassidy Vlot (Chowchilla, CA/Chowchilla HS) then came up with a two-run RBI double in the second.

Concordia cut the deficit in half in the sixth with a pair of runs and threatened to score more when leftfielder whipped a strike to the plate to nail a runner at the plate to end the uprising.

Concordia (6-8) placed two runners aboard in the seventh but could not score.

Vlot had a pair of doubles in the win while Avila and junior Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) also had two hits apiece.

Senior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) got the start and the win as she tossed the first 5.1 innings. Avila came on in the sixth and picked up the save.

Against Hamilton, Vlot went the distance for the Knights to pick up the win. Calvin scored both of its runs in the third inning as Pollock drove in sophomore Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) and Pollock was driven in by Vlot.

In the seventh, Hamilton placed runners on first and third with no out but Vlot was able to work her way out of the jam and preserve the win.

Calvin is scheduled to face Thomas College of Maine and Buena Vista College of Iowa on Thursday afternoon.
