Baseball Explodes for 18-10 Win Over Elmhurst;
Softball Falls to Colby and Chicago;
Women's Tennis Drops Pair of Matches;
Men's Lacrosse at Randolph Cancelled by Snowstorm
BASEBALL
Calvin 18, Elmhurst 10
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Calvin closed out its spring trip to Florida with a wild 18-10 victory over Elmhurst College Tuesday morning. Calvin jumped out to a 7-4 lead only to see Elmhurst tie the game 9-9. Calvin then took an 11-9 lead before exploding for seven late runs to put the game in the win column.
Junior Grand VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a huge day, scoring four runs, and blasting a two-run home along with a double. Junior Ben Wohl (Plymouth/Canton HS) was also superb with four hits, four runs scored and a two-run home of his own. Junior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had three hits and four runs batted in including a run-scoring triple and double.
In addition, sophomore Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) had two hits, two runs batted in and three runs scored while sophomore Michael Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a pair of hits as did sophomore Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS).
Junior Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) went the first 3.2 innings on the mound for Calvin with freshman Mike Militello (Commerce/Detroit Catholic Central HS) coming on and tossing 2.1 innings of relief. Militello was credited with the victory - the first of his collegiate career.
Senior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS), sophomore Jarod Stuyvesant (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and senior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also saw time in relief for Calvin in the nine-inning victory.
Calvin will now return home and prepare to swing back into league play. The Knights are scheduled to host Hope on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Colby 5, Calvin 4
Chicago 3, Calvin 1
CLERMONT, FL - Calvin suffered a pair of hard-fought defeats on Tuesday, falling to Colby College of Maine 5-4 in eight innings and then dropping a 3-1 decision to an undefeated Chicago team. Calvin is now 3-3 on the season.
In the loss to Colby, freshman Cassidy Vlot (Chowchilla, CA/Chowchilla HS) ripped three doubles while senior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) and junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) had two hits apiece.
Trailing 4-3, Calvin tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double by Vlot. Neither team was able to score in the sixth or seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Colby brought home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom half, Calvin had runners at first and second with one out but could not bring home the tying run.
Vlot tossed all eight innings for Calvin and took the loss, striking out seven and walking three.
In the loss to Chicago (6-0), Calvin was limited to only four hits. The Knights struck early, scoring in the top of the first as junior Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) led off with a double and later scored on a single by Avila.
Chicago responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, using back-to-back triples and a run-scoring groundout to take a 2-1 lead. The Maroons added an insurance run in the fourth and held Calvin scoreless the rest of the way.
VanderMeer had two of Calvin's four hits. Senior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) got the start and took the loss with Avila also coming on for two innings of relief.
Calvin is scheduled to take on Concordia of Wisconsin and Hamilton of New York on Wednesday in afternoon games in Florida.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Hamilton 7, Calvin 2
Luther 8, Calvin 1
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin saw its season record fall to 2-6 with a pair of non-conference defeats on Tuesday. Calvin opened the day with a 7-2 loss to Hamilton of New York and then suffered an 8-1 loss to Luther College of Iowa.
In the loss to Hamilton, Calvin picked up a point at one doubles as the tandem of junior Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshman Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won 8-3.
Visser later claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at number-one singles but the Knights were unable to take another point.
Against Luther College, Calvin's lone win came from freshman Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) as she recorded a 6-4, 7-6 win at four singles.
Calvin will now break until Thursday when it takes on Carthage College in its final match of its spring trip to Florida.
MEN'S LACROSSE
The Calvin men's lacrosse game against Randolph College of Virginia was cancelled on Tuesday by a sudden snowstorm that dumped more than five inches of snow on the Randolph campus. The game will not be made up.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, traveling to Beloit College of Wisconsin for a 2 p.m. (EDT) game.
