INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Calvin men's swim team got on the scoreboard and did so in record-breaking fashion Thursday night at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Calvin got into the team standings on the performance of its 400 medley relay team as the quartet of senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS), sophomore Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS), freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) and sophomore Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took 12th with a school record time of 3:20.94, breaking its own school record set earlier this year by more than a full second.
Mitchell led off the relay with a 100 backstroke split of 51.17 which matches the original Calvin record of 51.17 set by Mike Lubbers in 1996. The Lubbers record had been the oldest record still remaining on the Calvin men's swimming and diving record board.
The Calvin relay came into the meet seeded 15th but had a strong showing in the morning prelims, clocking the 13th-best time in 3:22.91, advancing the Knights into the consolation finals.
The Knights then exploded in the evening consolation finals to earn NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America honors.
"I think our six swimmers here have all received a good taste of what this meet is all about over the last two days," said Calvin men's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "This is the first national meet for all six of our guys and they got their eyes opened a bit early on because you find out how little it can take to swing you one way or the other with positive energy. Today our guys regained that energy and I am proud of the way they regrouped and came out swinging."
Calvin's 12th place finish gives the Knights 10 points and has them sitting in 29th place in the team standings.
Earlier in the day, Stoughton competed in the 100 fly prelims and took 38th in 50.29 while Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Mitchell, Schroder, junior Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Stoughton placed 20th in 1:25.35.
Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Friday are Cochran in the 100 breaststroke where he is seeded ninth, Stoughton in the 200 butterfly where he is seeded 27th and Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of sophomore Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS), Schroder, Baumann and Mitchell in the 800 freestyle relay that is seeded 15th.
