MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 86, Kalamazoo 59
By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin men's basketball team hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo College on Wednesday evening, looking to stay within a game of Hope College for first place.
In the meeting between the Knights and Hornets earlier this season, Calvin earned a 90-72 victory.
Playing at Van Noord Arena, it was much of the same as the Knights rolled to a dominating 86-59 win, with four Calvin players scoring in double figures.
Despite a couple of key injuries, Kalamazoo held with the Knights early as the teams were tied 14-14 with 13:45 remaining in the first half.
Calvin then went on a 9-0 run, including back-to-back layups by sophomore Jordan Daley, to take a 23-14 advantage.
The Knights lead continued to expand as they took advantage of the Hornets down on the block. Senior Tyler Kruis gave Calvin 12 points in the first half en route to a 45-27 halftime edge.
Out of the break, sophomore Austin Parks hit a trio of three-pointers as the Knights put the game out of reach, 58-35, with 14:57 to go.
Calvin then cruised to a final score of 86-59, shooting 51% in the win as ten players got into the scoring column.
The Knights assisted on 23-of-35 baskets while receiving 43 points from their bench. Calvin held Kalamazoo to just 38% shooting while forcing the Hornets into 13 turnovers.
"This team moves the ball really well. They're very unselfish and they take good shots," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "Kalamazoo switches on all screens, it opens up different things and our guys are willing to find the open guy and it was great to see us knock it in."
Kruis led the Knights with 16 points while Parks and sophomore B.J. Van Loo each added 13. Freshman Brad Visser scored 12 points off the bench.
Kalamazoo was led by Adam Dykema who scored a game high 21 points. Carter Goetz chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds while Grant Carey scored 10.
With the win, Calvin improves to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the MIAA while the Hornets drop to 9-13 and 4-7 in the MIAA.
The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they travel to Trine to face the Thunder in a 1 p.m. contest.
