The Calvin men's basketball team hosted the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College for the 186th edition of The Rivalry on Saturday afternoon. The Knights entered with a 9-3 record while Hope was 7-5. Both teams were 1-0 in conference play. Behind a strong three-point attack, Hope prevailed Saturday afternoon 71-63.

Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) began the scoring with a baseline jumper for the Knights, while Hope senior Nate Van Arendonk responded with a dunk.

The Flying Dutchmen then took the lead. Back-to-back threes by sophomore Alex Eidson gave Hope a 12-4 advantage.

Calvin scored six straight to cut the deficit to two, but another three and a layup by sophomore Ben Gardner for Hope gave the Flying Dutchmen a 17-10 lead.

The Knights again cut Hope's lead to two at 23-21, but a 7-0 run for the Flying Dutchmen put them up 30-21 with 4:13 remaining in the first half.

Calvin roared back, making a number of key blocks on the defensive end, tying the game at 31-31 as the Knights had an unusual five-point possession to end their run. Junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) hit a pull-up three in transition, and a loose-ball foul on Hope allowed senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) the chance at two free throws, which he both made.

With time running out in the first half, Eidson hit a corner-three at the buzzer to give Hope a 34-31 lead and momentum heading into halftime.

Eidson led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Kruis led the Knights with 13 points, making all seven of his free throws in the opening period.

A pair of free throws from sophomore Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) out of halftime got Calvin within one, but Hope rebuilt its lead up to 41-35 with 16:39 remaining in regulation.

Again the Knights whittled away at the Flying Dutchmen lead, but Eidson was on fire and would not cool down. Back-to-back three pointers from Eidson, the second from five feet beyond the arc, gave Hope a 49-41 lead with 13:22 on the clock.

After trading baskets, the Flying Dutchmen took their first double-digit lead of the game, and with 9:19 remaining, held a 59-45 lead after a pair of three-pointers.

The Knights, meanwhile, did not score any points over a near-five minute stretch in the second half, during which Hope extended its lead to 61-45.

Calvin responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a three from Brink, just his second and the team's second of the game, to bring the score to 61-53.

The Knights cut the Hope advantage to 69-63, but with only 11.4 seconds remaining, they could not make the comeback, and the Flying Dutchmen closed out a 71-63 victory at the free throw line.

Calvin shot just 33% for the game, its lowest shooting percentage of the season. Hope, on the other hand, shot 60% from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Knights 44-36.

Brink led Calvin with 22 points while Kruis added 15. For Hope, Eidson led all scorers with 23, hitting 6-of-7 from three point range, while VanArendonk had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"I think I could have done a better job preparing us. I give Hope a lot of credit, they came out and got right after us," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "They were the aggressors, we were not, and they knocked down shots."

The loss drops the Knights to 9-4 and 1-1 in league play while Hope improves to 8-5 and 2-0 in the MIAA.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts the Bulldogs of Adrian for another conference match-up. Wednesday's contest at Van Noord Arena is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
