Swimming and Diving Hosts Triangular With Ohio Northern and Albion;
Track and Field Opens Indoor Campaign With Dual Meets Against Aquinas;

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Through one day of competition at a triangular including Ohio Northern and Albion, the Calvin women's team is in first place with a total of 312.5 points while the Calvin men are in second in the men's standings wtih 274 points. Ohio Northern is second in the women's standings (262.5) followed by Albion in third (259). Ohio Northern leads the men's standings (338.5) wit Albion third (230.5).

The lone first place finish for the Calvin women's team came from freshman Adrienne Wesselius in the 50 freestyle (25.20). Sophomore Michaela Rookus was second in the 200 IM (2:15.09).
Calvin also won both relays as the 200 freestyle relay team of Rookus, Wesselius, senior Kristen Kinzer and junior Kathryn Wrobel won in a time of 1:40.87 while the Calvin 400 medley relay team of junior Erika Waugh, Rookus, junior Lexi Scott and Wrobel won in a time of 4:09.01.

In the men's meet, sophomore Aaron Venema won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:45.04 while freshman Brett Stoughton won the 200 IM (1:59.51). Senior Andrew Mitchell also came up with a victory in the 50 freestyle, touching thee wall in a time of 21.78.

Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Mitchell, sophomore Johnson Cochran, Stoughton and sophomore Mitch Schroder also won in a time of 3:32.49.

The triangular continues with competition Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and late Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns on Friday night inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center in dual meets against Aquinas.

Aquinas defeated Calvin in both competitions, defeating Calvin 94-44 on the men's side and 72-56 on the women's side.

In the women's meet, Calvin took the top seven spots in the 3,000 meters led by the one-two finish of freshman Cassie Vince (10:24.98) and Nicole Michmerhuizen (10:25.25).

Calvin also picked up wins in the field events as senior Hilary Banning won the triple jump (34-3 1/3) and the long jump (15-5 1/2). Junior Christina Geating won the pole vault (9-10) while junior Amy Sybesma won the high jump (5-1 3/4). Sybesma was part of a 1-2-3-4 Calvi9n finish in the high jump as junior Kelley Tuinenga was second (5-1 3/4), Geating third (4-11) and Bethany Van Eck fourth (4-11).
Senior Julie Busscher also had a strong night, placing third in the 60 meter dash (8.26) and second in the 150 meter dash (19.95). Tuinenga also added a second place finish in the 300 meter dash (46.34).

In the men's meet, Calvin took the top 12 spots in the 3,000 meters led by freshman Zach Nowicki who was first (9:18.03), junior Josh Ferguson who was second (9:25.60) and sophomore Jeff Meitler who wsa third (9:25.61).

In the shot put, senior Andrew Dykstra took first (47-5 1/2) and sophomore Eric Jipping second (47-5 1/4).

Junior Gerrit VanKlaveren won the triple jump (42-1) while Jeff VanderKamp was second (39-0 1/2).

In the long jump, junior Erik Holstege took first with a leap of 21-6 1/2. Junior Ben de Waal Malefyt also took seocnd in the weight throw (41-8 1/4).

Both teams will now prepare to compete at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Open next Friday.

FOLLOW CALVIN BASKETBALL TEAMS ON SATURDAY

The Calvin men's and women's basketball teams will be at home on Saturday with the women hosting Alma at 12:30 p.m. and the men hosting rival Hope in the 186th meeting between the two rivals.

CALVIN C' CLUB INVITES ALUMNI ATHLETES TO RENOVATED STEEN ROOM SATURDAY FOR PRE-GAME SOCIAL
Calvin alumni athletes: C Club has reserved the just-completed remodeled Steen Room, right off the Van Noord Arena lobby for a pre-game social prior to the Calvin-Hope men's game this Saturday at 3 p.m. Alumni athletes-whether members of C Club or not-are welcome to come with guests to stop in and see this great addition/resource to the athletics support and recruitment endeavor. The Steen Room is very sharp! Come see it before the game; light refreshments will be available.
