Men's Basketball Defeated by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 66, Calvin 50
CLAREMONT, CA - Calvin's two-game trip to Southern California concluded with a 66-50 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Monday night.
Calvin (8-3) struggled to find an offensive rhythm throughout the game, shooting just 33 percent from the field.
The two teams battled through a low-scoring first half but the host Staggs (6-4) used an 8-0 run to build a 26-18 halftime lead.
Calvin closed to within four at 28-24 early in the second half but the Staggs then went on an 11-2 run fueled by a trio of three-point shots by Jack Grodahl.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps lead later ballooned to 20 points at 53-33 before Calvin mounted a late rally, whittling the deficit down to 10 at 55-45 with 4:17 remaining. The Staggs responded with seven unanswered points including another three-pointer by Grodahl to put the game away.
Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) led Calvin with 16 points while junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) had 11 points and sophomore Austin Parks (Niles/Niles HS) nine.
Grodahl had 18 points and eight rebounds while Tyler Gaffaney had 13 and Scott Lynds 11 for Mudd-Scripps.
The Staggs shot 48 percent from the field overall and hit 9-of-24 (.380) from three-point range. Mudd-Scripps also held a 39-28 rebounding advantage.
Monday's game marked the third-ever meeting between the two teams in men's basketball but the first meeting in California. Calvin still leads the all-time series 2-1.
Calvin is back in action on January 8 when it travels to Alma for an 8 p.m. contest.
