MEN'S BASKETBALL

(Editor's Note: The Calvin men's basketball team is currently in Southern California where it recently defeated the University of Redlands 88-82 and will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on December 30 at 10 p.m. (EST). Jordan Brink, a junior on the Calvin team, is providing updates every-other day on the team trip).

JORDAN'S JOURNAL PART TWO (DEC. 29, 2013)

Last night we played University of Redlands and won 88-82. There was an amazing turnout by Calvin alumni and friends; we had a home court advantage 1,800 miles from Grand Rapids! Running out of our locker room to a gym packed full of Knights fans while in Southern California was a pretty special experience for all of us. After the game we had a reception at The River Christian Reformed Church in Redlands where we shared a meal with Calvin alums. Doug Jorritsma put on the event and has helped make our trip amazing. For that our team is extremely grateful.

This morning we drove down to Escondido to visit Dan Stout's old stomping grounds. We attended Crossroads Christian Reformed Church and had dinner at the Stouts. The combination of beautiful weather, delicious food, and team bonding made for a relaxing Lord's Day. After lunch we visited Balboa State Park for a couple hours. Besides the numerous museums, the highlight of the stop was freshman Michael Welch's key role in a juggling street performer's grand finale.
Tomorrow we play at 7 p.m. local time (PCT) against Claremont-Mudd Scripps. We have a shoot around in the morning and then are heading to Pasadena to check out some of the floats for the Rose Bowl Parade. We are flying out early Tuesday morning even though I don't think any of us are ready to bare the Michigan cold!
As a team this weekend we have talked a lot about our blessings. Coach Vande Streek led a devotion about this one of the first days we got here and it has sort of become our theme for the trip.
We are blessed in so many different ways as students of Calvin College. It has been an eye-opening and humbling experience to see the support of the Calvin community in a different part of the country.
God bless,

Jordan

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has picked up yet another prestigious honor as he has been named to the D3soccer.com All-America first team.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter has received a raft of awards this off-season after a standout junior campaign on the pitch that saw him score 27 goals, collect six assists and garner 50 points.

Vegter is the latest in a recent string of Calvin players to earn D3soccer.com All-America accolades. Miles Colago was a D3soccer.com All-American for Calvin in both 2010 and 2011 while Calvin's Nick Holtrop was a 2012 D3soccer.com All-American.

*Capital One Division III Academic All-District Team
*Capital One Division III Academic All-America First Team
