Men's Basketball Travels to Southern California - Journal Entry #1 by Jordan Brink
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 111, Marygrove 62
CALEDONIA - A red-hot shooting performance from the perimeter propelled the Calvin women's basketball team to a 111-62 victory over Marygrove College at the Davenport Holiday Tournament Friday afternoon. Calvin's point total is the second-highest single-game scoring total in school history, surpassed only by the 116 points scored against Kalamazoo in 1979.
In its win over Marygrove, Calvin (7-3) connected on 12 of 19 attempts from three-point range for a sizzling 63.2 percent clip. Seven different Calvin players connected on at least one three-point field goal led by freshman MacKenzie Shelton (Niles/Brandywine HS) who was 3-of-4 from long range.
Calvin led 63-37 at halftime and then proceeded to shoot 70 percent from the field in the second half.
Five different Calvin players notched double-digits in scoring led by sophomore Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) and freshman Anna Timmer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) with 12 points apiece. Juniors Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 11 points apiece while sophomore Jeanna Sybesma (Dallhart, TX/Dallhart HS) had a career-high 10 points off the bench.
Calvin held a 47-37 rebounding advantage with sophomore Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) collecting a team-high seven rebounds to go with nine points.
Calvin will now prepare to face host Davenport on Saturday at 3 p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
(Editor's Note: The Calvin men's basketball team is currently in Southern California where it will face the University of Redlands on Saturday at 5 p.m. (EST) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next Monday at 10 p.m. (EST). Jordan Brink, a junior on the Calvin team, is providing updates every-other day on the team trip. Here is his first journal entry)
JORDAN BRINK JOURNAL ENTRY - DEC. 27
We started the day with practice at Claremont Mudd-Scripps, a school made up of three different colleges. We actually play there on Monday night, but it is much closer to our hotel than the University of Redlands. Afterwards we had to stop at In-N-Out Burger because our Californian Dan Stout would not stop raving about it. The consensus on the team was that it lived up to the hype!
We spent the rest of the afternoon at Venice Beach. Some of the guys hung out at the beach and went swimming, others walked down the boardwalk and took in the sights. Venice Beach is an interesting place to say the least, it is filled with unique characters and stores much different than anything we have experienced back home. One of the highlights of the afternoon was watching the guys at Muscle Beach throw up some serious weight. Senior Mickey DeVries was confident he could hang with them but didn't get his chance to shine.
After a long day of traveling yesterday and battling the Los Angeles traffic today, we enjoyed the rest of the night at the hotel just hanging out. We play tomorrow afternoon at University of Redlands and head to Escondido on Sunday for church and lunch with the Stouts!
Go Knights!
