WOMEN'S SOCCER
Washington University 3, Calvin 1
By Mark DeHaan
(Editor's Note: On Saturday night, the women's soccer recap was inadvertently left off the Calvin Knight Sports Report - it is included in this weekend digest wrap)
ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin women's soccer advanced to second round play on Saturday evening on the campus of Washington University of St Louis. In the second round, the Knights faced the host Bears, ranked #1 in the country. Calvin was coming off a double-overtime 1-0 victory over Aurora University and Washington defeated St. Norbert 5-2 yesterday.
In its game on Friday versus St. Norbert, Washington University conceded two goals in the opening 12 minutes before scoring five straight.
Calvin used the Bears' slow start against them on Saturday evening as sophomore Paige Capel, who scored Friday's overtime winner, scored just over two minutes into Saturday's contest to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
WashU responded minutes later, netting a goal from the center of the box into the bottom right corner in the 10th minute to tie the contest at 1-1.
With just over a minute left in the first half, senior keeper Ashton Hearn made a great, punching save on a head ball toward frame that kept the game knotted at one.
The game would remain that way for the rest of the first half as they teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1. The Bears held a 10-2 shots advantage in the opening period as well as a 7-0 margin in corner kicks.
Out of the break, the Bears took the lead in the 49th minute on a header that found the back of the net.
In the 61st minute, Calvin had a dangerous free kick sent in by sophomore Sydney Kinney that bounced around the WashU box before being cleared by the defense.
Unfortunately for Calvin, Friday night's overtime game began to take its toll and the Knights struggled to create any more strong opportunities on net.
The Bears added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to take a 3-1 advantage, and the deficit and lack of time proved to be too much for the Knights as they fell to the top team in the country.
WashU outshot Calvin 25-3 in the match while also building a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks by the end of the game.
"We spent a lot of energy last night, and eventually, it was going to take a toll. Our team never quit playing and we kept playing our best," said head coach Mark Recker.
"(Washington) is a quality team and probably worth their ranking. In terms of what we had, we gave it our best shot and left it all out on the field."
The loss ends the careers of seniors Danielle Carter, Ashton Hearn, Kelly Koets, Paige Rindels, Heidi Scholten, and Rebekah Wissink.
"I can't say enough about what our seniors have done," said Recker. "They've left a legacy of what we want Calvin soccer to represent. They played with dignity, effort, and quality, and created a product that was fun to watch. I don't think you can ask anything else from your players."
Calvin ends the season with an overall record of 19-3-2. The win total is the second-highest single-season total in Calvin women's soccer history.
