CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 10, 2013

Calvin Sweeps Post-Season MIAA Volleyball Awards;
NCAA III Fall Sports Selection Shows Set for Monday

VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin volleyball team picked up a complete sweep of the three major postseason awards presented by the MIAA Saturday night.

Calvin senior setter Megan Rietema was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player while senior libero Kristen Zietse was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Defensive Player. In addition, Calvin freshman middle-hitter Laura Danhoff was named the MIAA's Freshman of the Year.

Rietema and Zietse are both natives of Grand Rapids and graduates of Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Rietema is the first Calvin setter to receive the MIAA MVP award since Betsy Wilgenburg was so honored in 1992. Calvin's current head coach Amber (Blankespoor) Warners was also a two-time MIAA MVP as a setter, doing so in 1988 and 1989.

Zietse is the first Calvin player to receive MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors since Kelsey Sears did so in 2008.

A native of Willard, Ohio, Danhoff (Willard HS) is the eighth individual from Calvin to receive MIAA Freshman of the Year honors and the fourth individual from Calvin to do so in the last five years.

In addition, Rietema has been named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth straight year. She is just the seventh individual in MIAA history to be a four-time first team All-MIAA selection. She is also the fourth from Calvin to do so, joining Leah Calsbeek (1983-1986), Katie Zondervan (2004-2007) and Rebecca Kamp (2008-2011).

Joining Rietema on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and Zietse. They are both receiving first team All-MIAA accolades for the first time.

Danhoff was named to the All-MIAA second team and was joined on the second team by Calvin junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS).

Calvin captured a share of its fourth straight MIAA regular season title this fall. On Saturday, the Knights claimed their third consecutive MIAA Tournament title, defeating top-ranked Hope in five sets at Calvin's Van Noord Arena. The Knights earned a bid to the NCAA III Tournament for the 10th straight year with the win. Calvin will find out its NCAA III regional assignment on Monday morning with the NCAA III bracket is unveiled at 11 a.m. A live video stream of the announcement will be available online at: http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2013/11/11
